I will be doing a lot of solo hunting this year, so I purchased a SPOT locator beacon I can activate in case of emergency for my family's peace of mind.
I will be in 86 and then moving up to 25,26 until I fill my deer tag, then moving where the elk are for the rest of season.
Going to try to hold out for a bull with that OTC either sex tag.
Well thats a good idea. I pretty much have GPS waypoints but that Spot Locator sound smart. Where did you get yours and price? Amazing the stuff they have now a days. I will be doing alot of night hiking getting to and from stands so you never know. I like getting in my stand at least an hour before sun up. Sometimes that means hiking in at 300am. Thanks!!
I picked mine up on ebay for about $100, then the yearly price for activation is $108.
You can send an "ok" message, send a help request to friends (non emergency), or activate the SOS/911 button if you really have problems.
I just got back from scouting in New Mexico and scoped 5 different bull elk with the two best to both being 5X6 one that was probably 300-320 and the other was 330+ the bigger two bulls are already hard horned. Supprisingly none of the bulls were bachelored up all singles.
I also saw lots of mule deer bucks best was 165-170 5x5 that was about 28 inches wide makes me wish I had a mulie tag.
One thing that this trip made me relize was that I still need to work on getting in better shape after 15 miles of hiking the mountains I am a little sore.
will be heading out the 15th of sept. after back, knee surgery the days of diy is over so were heading up to colorado with mark horne and top hand outfitters. hunted with mark last year in new mexico and this is gona be a good one for me cause i get to take my son and were both PUMPED...
Was watching an elk hunt on the outdoor channel last night with the CEO of Dodge up hunting with Three Forks Ranch in northwest Colorado.
Pretty good footage but the guy was driving me nuts at the end.
The guide had talked about how they like to take their hunters to a lot of places and not just to where the good bulls are, so they have more than a 30 minute hunt.
Then the guy from Dodge is talking about how hard they had to work to get this elk.
He planned the hunt knowing he only had two days to hunt.
Then they called the "recovery team" once the elk was down.....
I said to my wife, I need one of those "recovery teams". !!!
I would like to see mr. fancy pants dodge hang out with one of us normal hunters for a week of hunting the mountains of Colorado, then talk about how "hard" he worked in the two days he had to hunt.
Heck at two days I'm just getting into the groove of hunting!

I am thinking back and knee surgery would end my elk hunting days all together. Glad to hear you're getting out there, and with your son as well!
