You’re going to be cold and miserable with a jacket like that. 11k in Sept/Oct can get into the 20s or lower. Add rain/snow any hypothermia is a risk.

    - Cotton kills. High tech fabrics or wool. Especially your socks.

    - Underarmour Cold Gear as base layer. Next. Layer merino wool,

    - Look at Kuiu or Sitka Gear. There’s a reason guys pay that much for clothing.

Thank you I’ve been trying to locate weather patterns for that time of year where we’ll be, but not having much luck.

I’ll look in the 20-45° range then i just don’t want to be to hot, and find myself with packing around more clothes than i need. Or also be sweating and smelling up a storm. Thanks for that info [emoji1374]

Kuiu and Sitka Gear camo patterns will work.

Dressing in layers is the key to not overheating and not freezing.

Also buy gear with under arm and outside of leg zippers let you vent body heat or close when cold.

Scent matters, but you need to play the thermals and/or wind for that. You are going to be breathing hard and maybe sweating if you are moving enough to find them.

I was good in FL merino wick (whatever their lightest) base layer, plus 230 gram FL merino hoody/long johns, with pants and an ultralight jacket (Predator Camo ultralight) down to 15 degrees last fall and that was in a pretty stiff wind blowing snow.

When I sat down, I put on an uncompagre puffy and was good.

            I run hot, though.

Also, if this stuff is looking too pricey, I bought most of my clothes secondhand off of Rokslide, all in like new condition or NWT and saved a bunch of money.

              Prana Zion pants
              120-140 merino weight base shirt
Then synthetic fleece mid like the Klamath or Sitka heavy core or kuiu 240 peloton etc
Then puffy(I’m a huge fan of MH ghost whisper)
Kuiu zip of base layer pants 140’ish?
              Rain jacket
              Gloves, beanie, neck gaiter

              That covers you from 20-100

Been using same set up for years. From Sept elk to Jan mule deer. Only difference is I change out the puffy to a heavier one

I take kuiu attack pants, a light merino t shirt a mid weight merino q zip, and depending on the situation a puffy and rain jacket or a soft shell jacket that's water proof. Honestly base layers have been the biggest waste of money for me, only reason I take base layer pants is to sleep with them on as I can't stand the sticky feeling of a pad and quilt on bare skin, otherwise I'd sell my pair.

Prana stretch zions are extremely nice pants as well however I don't care for how they feel when sweaty and for some reason the integrated belt comes loose pretty easy on me otherwise they are my favorite pants made.

Absolutely! I'm very hot natured and can take very cold temps, but as soon as the sun goes down behind the mountains, it gets COLD. Especially if you've been hiking all day. Your body is tired and has expelled a TON of energy. At 11k feet, it will be at or below freezing opening week of archery in CO and I've often seen snow. 3rd/4th week will be even colder.

Like others have said, layer. Don't wear ANYTHING cotton, especially socks or underwear.

Once the sun gets low , you will want some kind of merino under layer.
Hypothermia sets in easily once you get sweaty and then chilled .
You can take off layers through the day as you hike and hunt then put them back on as the sun gets low.
Many times we've ended up during the day in our under layer as a hunting shirt then layered back up for the evening hunt.
The Brother in law thought we were kidding the year he came up for an elk hunt and brought his cotton Texas clothes after we told him not too. He nearly froze and learned a good lesson.
You're getting great advice form the guys on here.
Watch Camofire.com for deals on some merino or camo hunting clothes.
Knee pads in your pants are a real blessing you'll find.

Fred it seems you're liking the First Lite; that's the main hunting gear I wear as well. Last year in Colorado we were hunting and camping anywhere from 10,500-11,200 during Sep 6-16th. Everybody in my crew pretty much had the same clothes and was comfortable.

Top- Longsleeve Wick as the base layer, Kiln/Chama, and Uncompahgre/Cirrus Puffy. Bottom-Guide lite Pants and Darn Tough Socks, Black Ovis 50/50 Boxer briefs or some merino briefs.

Stormlight Ultralight Rain Jacket and Pants stayed packed in the bag except for 1 day; almost didn't bring them and considering that again but it's a high risk. The Uncompahgre can pack into it's own pocket and doubles as a pillow which is great.

85% of the time we were in just our pants and wick long sleeve shirts but in the early/late hours, it gets plenty chilly. We had at least 3 nights get below freezing and form ice around camp.

Thanks everyone for any and all input had several guys reach out in pm as well offering codes, and websites to follow. I’m a complete greenhorn through an through lol I’ve never even seen an elk in the flesh, but after 25 years of chasing white tails as hard as possible all over the country and into Mexico. I’m looking to try a new challenge while youth is still somewhat on my side i will be doin OTC in Colorado to hopefully build some knowledge. I’ve learned there’s tons of little things before you even get to the elk aspect so I’ll be earning my stripes over the next few years doing otc while i build points to get a good draw hopefully, and by that point have learned enough to raise my success rate. As for my camo i really like the first lite pattern over the kuiu, but gear in general i would rather buy good quality that i won’t be replacing year after year. I’m beyond greatful for all the input reason i love this place so much!

Patton how often did you wear the Kiln/Chama?
I was thinking about buying the Kiln but figured if I got cold the Uncompahgre would be good enough.
I am going on my first Elk Hunt Sept. 20-28 in CO and will be camping around 11K.
