I think you did the right thing by letting him know the HE blew any chance of his son getting his money back. If he calls again....remind him of that just in case he forgot...then nicely hang up.

Although that was a terrible way to act, I don't think he broke any laws. He had already said, "you need to return my son's money" before you knew he was a cop. You mentioned police and he identified himself as one. Then he reitterated the "you need to return my son's money" thing. Just identifying himself as a cop isn't oppression; he had already made his demands before that. Sure, you could report him and let someone else decide if he did wrong, but unless it's pretty clear cut, I think they're going to give him the benefit of the doubt. Just my opinion.

We all make mistakes, and yes the guy was wrong to badge you. He could have gotten into serious trouble if you had pursued this at the time. The apology has to count for something, which it appears it did. Don't let this guys actions speak for all of law enforcement though. Just remember we are human too and we make mistakes.

He shouldve never used his badge or creds as an intimidation tool. I would have reported him. I am a federal agent and that type of behavior is unprofessional and blatantly wrong. If you dont report this incident, he will continue this behavior. Next time he will probably intimidate someone who will fold under pressure and be a victim of the bullying. He needs to be taught a lesson. No one is above the law, no one!!

Id let it ride. I think you handled it very well and perhaps better than i would have, idk. The apology would be more than enough for me tho. Im more for handling things man to man (i am not insinuating that i would have fought the man) than by policies. He messed up, he apologized, done deal. Just my opinion.

its not like they towed it or something. it was DRIVING!
Did the Dad or Son say why specifically they were wanting to return it or did they just say it was a POS?

                  Just curious!

I am thinking that if you buy an $1800 vehicle you better be prepared for some minor issues to come up!

                      I'll second that motion.

Now if he would have said something like I am a cop and I will find a reason to put you in jail the next time you drive down the road...then he would have been treading in forbidden territory.

The guy was taking up for his kid who was lying to him. In doing so he was rude and abusive and needs no slack given. Once he found out at that he was made a chump of by his idiot son, he backed off and apologized.

It could be reported to his department and they can look into it and that is fine. Maybe the guy has a history of such action or maybe this is a one time deal that family got him involved in. If it is reported they will know his history and deal with it.

Nope, just that it was a POS,

I asked the dad when on the phone the last time. If he knew it was such a POS why he let his son buy it. He said that his son loved it, and that he thought I put speakers in it, and lights and CB to try to earn potential young buyers, and he told his son it was a POS when they left my house.

AND, I do miss it and kind of regret not taking it back for the 1500, BUT at that point it was the fact of the matter!

I do miss that thing. was a great rig!

You should have told him to wait for your mechanic to look at it.

If he did it to you, he'll do it to someone else. I'd call and talk to his superior. Cops know they're held to a higher standard of behavior than that. They're public servants and you should be able to expect better of them.

I would let it slide. After things cooled down he did appoligize.

Question is what if it had been someone else in a different situation?

It is stuff like this that give LEO's a bad rep which is not fair to all of the good LEO's out there. The reason officers of the law are held to a higher standard is because of situations like this. They are in a position of power and respect and using that in an instance like this is a big no no.
                                Completely agree!
