Lived in Rhome for a long time. There is a reason there are few trees out there. It is SUPER rocky out there. I couldn't even get a couple of shrubs to live. Seriously, our place had almost zero soil 3 inches from the surface.

Don't let anyone discourage you Sippy. You are young and life is about dreams. Dream big and keep dreaming. It's funny how hard work and dreams become reality in time.

I think I would sit on the gold mine! Let the city keep coming to you! By the time you are out of college.....it could be worth a mint to some developer and then you could go out and get that place you originally dreamed of! Either way......good luck!

It WILL grow up, within a decade is my guess......unless our "president" has anything to say about it.....then it will be a desert.

I would say, find a way to turn that land into REAL big dollars, then let your dream take off. Natural gas would be a good place to start....

Not to discourage, but there is a reason that trees didn't or haven't grown there naturally since the beginning of time. Have you checked the history of the land to see if they were cleared way back for cattle grazing purposes, or if they were never there to begin with? IMO planting mesquite trees is the kiss of death because they will take over in a fairly short time, then you will be spending years trying to control them and their spread. They are nearly as invasive as cedar trees!!

Look into the oak family, and primarily those which are the most drought resistant. Live oak, black oak and red oak will probably grow the best in that area, and maybe some white oak, but generally not. If you have a way, start a small orchard of a variety of fruit trees, and fence them off so they have the best chance of survival without being eaten as saplings. I do believe you can make it work, but it will not be cheap nor will it be easy.

But then again, anything worth something generally isn't easy to begin with!! Good Luck.

Fence lines with hackberry trees from the birds pooping doesn't necessarily mean that good forage trees will grow there. Just sayin do some research before dropping a lot of coin on trees that wont grow!
