My go to call is the Illusion Mini Mag. For some reason I just really like that call, it doesn't have a very high end to it, but since ducks have been pressured from canada all the way down before they get here I like the softer sound. A good little advice is learn to use a wistle you can sound like a wigeon, pintail, mallard drake. Its better to not call than to call too much or do something wrong.

I think the first thing you need to learn about calling ducks is not how to blow a call its when to blow the call. You can sit out there all day and have blow your lungs out to get your limit. You can also sit out there all day and do little to nothing as far as calling to get your limit. It is really trial and error on a day to day basis. As far as calls go they are all the same IMO.

I have a BigGuysBest that I got from Cabelas. They use Echo inserts and it's a great call. It's Cocobolo and Acrylic. I think it was $60?

As others here have said, most duck hunters blow a call too much. Really the only time a call should be blown is if you are trying to call in a passing group thats not giving you a look, or if you have a group/single thats working, and working and working and just wont drop in, then maybe give them a short cadence or a feed call.

The majority of duck hunters, especially rookies end up pushing more ducks away than bringing ducks in.

        LET THEM WORK.
Good point....if you're sitting on a hole and you see a duck in the vicinity and it's not passing by at 100 yards up, chances are it already WANTS to go to the hole you're sitting at. It might make a few passes, but it's looking to come in. I may give a few soft quacks and a feed call if I have decoys out, to add realism, but I try not to call very much. In my experience, divers tend to zoom on in and the bigger puddlers always make a pass or two before they commit.

i have cutdown calls and and duck commander calls. if i was to buy a new call today it would be a rich n tone. that being said there are many good calls out there. big guys best makes some good calls. echo makes good calls. haydels and primos are good also. get you a call that you like and practice. when i was learning i would take the call with me on my way to work and practice on the drive. maybe get you a tape recorder and record what you sound like. you still have a little time before the ducks move out to go out and see how they react to your calling. just remember less is more when calling ducks. you just want to get their attention.

Eric, Haydel's DR-85 is very easy and tune-able for most any situation, and a good beginner call. If you get two, one can be tuned to sound like a gadwall, or one set for open water/windy days, or one soft-nd up for ponds. That way when ya get a little experiance under your belt, you'll always have a back-up. Met the man back in the day when I was first beginning, and he was first take-n his product to market. Next in line would be the Duck Commnder Classic, and then Quack Head Calls for your first. Quack Head Calls is owned by RTN and venture to the "affordable" market.

As for whistles, I've had the same whistle for twenty years now, a Haydel.

If you'd ever like some short instruction, or would like to try a few out, well, you know where I live . Just give me a call (so to speak )

I was simply stating that Keechi was a good call, just because my buddy won junior worlds doesn't mean he can't meat call. I mean if a duck can't win a duck calling contest that should tell you something. But I will say this those boys in those competitions can blow and you can't take that away from them. My advise is don't be a hater and get in where you fit in it is always typical of someone who is a lesser caller than someone else to make comments like you made. I can blow with the best of them but there are guys out there that are better than me by far.

So you keep putting those injection molded Asian companies to work and good hunting to you.

Start with the DR-85, if you like it step up to an acrylic, dont know any duck hunter that doesnt own a whole drawer full of calls, fun items to collect

Never heard a real duck sound like this.

I can make a call scream just as good as they can doesn't mean that a duck sounds like that. I want a call that doesn't echo across a lake, and let ever duck in the county know that there is a hunter that is a champion duck caller setting over there. I want a duck to know there is ducks sitting in that hole so thats where he wants to be. You dont have to be a champion duck caller to kill ducks.

I don't recall ever saying you had to be a competition caller to kill ducks. What that guy you posted was doing was showing his vocal range, and air control that is what competition calling is about. Every one knows a real duck doesn't sound like that even the guy in the video you posted. I bet that guy can meat call too and ther is no doubt of that because he has total control of his cadience, tone, and air.

You should take your feelings off your shoulder and relax, so what if I think Duck Commander calls are mass produced, outsourced and sound like crap you like them so you do you. I think Phil and his brothers have a good gimick going I just have never been one to buy into the hype and sell my soul to the highest bidder like them.

One of the best calls I have was made by Medic911 here on TBH. I gave a custom one he made for me with blacktail deer antler as bands on the barrel to my son, and he and friends love one he made me with an osage orange barrel. I, unfortunately, believe I am clinically "Call Disabled" despite many attempts from many friends to teach me how to how to make a call sound something like a duck. It's far better to not mallard hail call poorly than to sound like somebody blowing a kazoo (I hear that in the refuges all the time).

To answer your question, Phil "The Duck Commander" Robertson makes nice calls.

Sorry your thread was jacked TB, duck commander makes good call's. Go get a couple cheap call's and learn to blow them. You do not need some fancy acrylic call. I have literally killed thousands of ducks per season with my parties and I use cheap call's. The call is only as good as the one blowing it. Pretty call's are for hunters not ducks.
