DR-85 is by far the most user friendly and easiest to blow(especially for a beginner). It has good tones, even for an experienced hunter. As stated above, calling may be the least important factor in calling ducks. It just adds realism and more of a confidence factor, especially this far south in the migration. Good luck in killin' a bunch of redlegs!

Good advice here...DR 85 is a great call. Cheap enough you can buy two and keep a backup in the bag for when the first one gets full of snuff, mud, dust, etc. and starts sounding bad! I have a real nice Keechi SR but I usually use the DR85

Keechi is a good call as well, my buddy was sponsered by them and had his own call by them that he won the junior worlds and numerous other competetions with.

As far as the Duck Commander calls go the only one I would own is the teal call and to be honest the Haydells sounds better. I do enjoy their movies though even though they did get busted hunting over heavily baited holes a couple years back. To each is his own but to say the duck picker is better than any other call on the market well, Obama said he was going to save our country too but we see where we are now.

By the way, no he did not get my vote.

I am new to duck hunting as well. Long story short, I went the last day of the season with a guy that had the best sounding call I have ever heard. I cant find one but I dont exactly remember the name either. Im pretty sure it was made by HS and it was wood. I think it also had the word "wood" in its name?(No, not a wood duck call) Said he has had it for 15-20 years. Anyone got any ideas??

RNT. Had many others over the years, now I have one. Worth the money and American made.

I don't spend alot of money on calls. I've been using the Duck Commanders for quite a while and I really like the Duck Picker as well as the Willie's Camo Max. Willie's is a little softer than the picker. I keep a couple of each in my bag. I have also used the Echo calls which aren't bad for the price. I still like the sound of the good old Yentzen designed by Mr. Cowboy Fernandez himself. Just try a few out and see which ones you can actually blow. Some will be more difficult than others for you to learn on.

Just one tip when you start, don't just blow air through the call. You have to put some grunt into it. Good luck.

I'll add one for the Haydel's DR-85. That's what I learned on about 12 years ago and I'm still killing ducks with it. Very easy to use, I recommend you get something like that to learn on and then upgrade later if you want. But as people on here have said, you can spend a LOT of money trying to find the "right" duck call. I've tried several and keep going back to the DR-85.

Buy a cheap call and learn how to blow it.

I use a couple custom calls a buddy of mine turned. Also blow a classic Commander, a Sure Shot and a Haydel's (?) Red Leg.

i have never heard a duck scream like a champion duck caller... Have you???? I dont need to have a call sound like a sick duck screaming.... Just need one to sound like a mallard hen.

I can't believe nobody has mentioned the Primos Wench. Best beginer call on the market. Get the Speak the Language DVD that goes with it.

My suggestion is to get 2 and put one in your vehicle. When I was learning I would blow mine all the time, but the wife got tired of it. So I would practice in the car while driving around.

To the OP, just remember, you get what you pay for. You dont have to have a $160 call, but I wouldnt buy a $15 call either.

I have a BigGuysBest that I got from Cabelas. They use Echo inserts and it's a great call. It's Cocobolo and Acrylic. I think it was $60?

As others here have said, most duck hunters blow a call too much. Really the only time a call should be blown is if you are trying to call in a passing group thats not giving you a look, or if you have a group/single thats working, and working and working and just wont drop in, then maybe give them a short cadence or a feed call.

The majority of duck hunters, especially rookies end up pushing more ducks away than bringing ducks in.

                                LET THEM WORK.
