If I'm strictly deer hunting or targeting a certain animal, I'll usually take a bolt gun (suppressed). Yet if there is a chance at hogs or I'm just riding around, the AR is what's next to me.
A bolt gun is quieter and easier to maneuver in the stand, quieter to load and lighter to carry. Follow up shots take up to 2 seconds to reload and another 2 to reaquire and shoot.
With an AR, I can have up to 3 hogs down or dying in the time it'll take to reload.
I have taken 4 hogs with a bolt gun as opposed to my brothers 3 with an AR from one sounder, so bolt can be quick. Yet, if I'd of had the AR, could've probably eliminated the entire doubt.
Every tool has its purpose. And a gun is nothing but a tool. Use the right to for the job and success is easier.

I didn’t own an AR style before 2004.
I’m a bow hunter by choice but the main reason I own guns/AR isn’t for hunting reasons.
For me…my choice for home protection is my AR9mm(has the 16” barrel) with 30rd mags loaded with 147 grain Federal HST. In this scenario, I want low recoil, controlled expansion and lower noise level at the shot. I want as many 30 round magazines as I can get. My mind set is too be as ready as possible for anything. We don’t get to pick how evil attempts to attack and may not be time for many reloads. Plus it’s easy to operate for my wife and daughter as well.
My second choice is my AR15 then my Glock 9mm.
My AR9mm runs off Glock mags so I can double dip on the mags for which gun is needed at the time.

I have one AR with thermal that I use strictly for night hunting hogs/predators.
Use a 20 round mag 99% of the time. Though I have been tempted to use it for day time coyotes, but just prefer bolt action.
Bolt gun for deer, shotgun for birds. Pistol for home defense and the occasion water moccasin.

Ok I'll bite do I need an AR or any semi auto, nope I can defend myself and others with out it. Do I need one to hunt nope, I can do just fine with any rifle or handgun. Do I have one, yep. Why well because I can, I also have a Cadillac and a diesel pickup. It's my right to have them and no one can tell me otherwise.

I didn't get one until 5-6 years ago amidst all the reporting at the time that they could be made illegal. Other than shooting hogs while working at the lease, I bow hunt only and my 30-30 is just a lot easier to manage outside bow hunting season. I've probably fired less than 50 rounds through it and it would not affect me at all if I didn't have one. That said, when the talk heated up of them potentially being banned, I did go out and get one. I personally just don't have a need for one.

I prefer eating prime ribeyes and lobster but I don't need them to live everyday and if I only had Choice Sirloin and Potatoes I would prob still live life the same, but just have a little more money in my pocket.
I have a SKS I bought right before Clinton signed his bill that I paid $75 for. It sat for years with probably 10rounds through it right after I bought it. I’ll Cary it on the 4 wheeler occasionally for hogs, but don’t use it to hunt, don’t use it for home protection. But I have watched my kids sit on the porch at the camp house with numerous of their friends over the years go through 1,000’s of rounds shooting eggs, oranges, apples and soda cans. The less you have to reload the more enjoyable it is, stopping to reload isn’t fun. With your line of thought here a shotgun doesn’t need to hold more than 2 shells, who the hell kills a bird with the 3rd shot after missing with the 1st 2?
You keep is not a 2nd amendment question, but it is. Just because you don’t have a need for a 30 round clip doesn’t mean someone else doesn’t. I don’t have a 30round clip, but if Timmy down the road wants one for his needs who am I to judge.

Didn't own an AR pre-2004. I remember when they became legal to purchase again. I thought to myself... "they are ugly, and I have no use for them.
Several years later, I was hunting at our family's place and had been hearing about "the pigs."
Right at dark a wad of pigs came out. I had a bolt action 223 with me. I busted one, reloaded and hit another but it ran off, reloaded and missed the 3rd. The rest of the pigs ran off. I got out of the blind and was laughing so hard.... hadn't had that much fun in a while.
I came home and decided I needed a "pig gun." Stopped by a store that I had been wanting to visit and they were having a "black Friday" sale. I walked out of there with a 300 BLK and my paperwork submitted for my suppressor. I remember my wife saying "Who do you think you are? Some kind of Rambo?!" I just chuckled and said "Nope, just wanted a fun pig gun and before they get banned again, I thought I'd get one." She just laughed and said ok.
To answer your question: Would I still be able to do the same things I was doing pre-2004? Yes. I could still hunt, target shoot, teach others gun safety, and everything else I was doing pre-2004 without an AR. But now, I also have the opportunity to do all those same activities with an AR AND show others that it's not the gun that is the issue. But my thoughts on who should be able to purchase and own them have changed a lot recently.... Since you didn't ask that question, I will keep that for another discussion/thread.
I hope you find the answer you are looking for in this thread. I have been honest in my response and it's not intended to be confrontational or dismissive. In fact, I like what you have done here. It's gotten me to thinking about things....
