Nice, that looks like you drilled a new speed hole in its head.

I have a Savage 93 stainless varmint, it's pretty accurate, if I use the CCI TNT ammo. It will make tiny little groups at 100 yards, with that ammo. With any ammo that uses Hornady V Max bullets or a V Max style bullet, it will only shoot about 1" at best, at 100 yards.

It's very flat out to about 150 yards, then the velocity seems to fall off quickly. I used to shoot mine out to 200 and 250 yards. I can tell you beyond 250, the bullet drop, increases pretty quickly. I used to practice by shooting the white tops of Tee posts out to 250 yards. At 250, I think I was holding over about 10", been a while. You will hear a Whack!, when you hit the Tee posts, even at that range. And the Tee posts will swing side to side when you hit them. It still packs a decent punch out that far.

I have killed a lot of squirrels and coons with the two 93 17s I have had. I have killed a few coyotes, head shots are definitely best if you want them to go down quickly. On head shots, it will bug their eyes out. On chest shot coyotes, they will run a ways and leave very little blood trail.

My favorite purpose for the 17 HMR, is flipping coons on their back. When they are looking straight at you, with their head down eating. I like to shoot them right above the head or right through the top of the head. It flips them over on their back, with all four legs in the air, even those really big coons.

Not sure how it compares to a 22 mag. I would guess, not as much penetration, probably has much more rapid expansion and more damage at least inside 150 yards. Much flatter trajectory, out to at least 150 yards, possibly a lot farther.

I haven't seen one that isn't accurate. I prefer a .22mag over the .17hmr for shooting heavier bodied animals though. I've lost way fewer critters with it than I have the .17 but they both work well. It's a good prairie dog cartridge. Only problem is the wind affects it more than the .22mag. My buddy shoots a .17hmr and I shoot a .22mag. I normally have fewer prairie dogs crawl back down the hole. But it's shooting a heavier bullet too though so it's hitting a little harder.

Neither one is really a good predator huntin cartridge unless you're hitting them in the head or neck in my experience. But for small varmints they're more than adequate.

I bought a new England when the round first came out. I've killed a pile of critters with it. Its shoots the 17 grain well.

I lucked into 15 boxes for free which make me want a threaded bolt action

Head shots only with my .17. It’s accurate enough for me to trust every shot.

Ruger American rum fire bull barrel suppressed is a great varmint control gun. Mine stacks vmaxs at 100yards have not shot further yet. Killed a few yotes too.

I have the Marlin fat barrell. My favorite gun to shoot, raccoons, squirrels, hogs, and turkeys have been taken. Mine shoots the Federal rounds best, they were hard to find when I first got it, bought I could find. I still have some of the Hornady that work too.

I will say probably the nicest .17hmr I've shot was a Marlin 17VS but I also really like the Ruger 77/17. But I've also shot a cheaper Marlin, a Henry lever action,a few Savage rifles and my NEF and they're all good shootin guns as I mentioned. I shot thousands of rounds through that Marlin 17VS though. Really accurate, nice lookin and good quality. I always wanted a Savage Mako in .17hmr but I never got one. I should have.
