My buddy and I used to have contest in the prairie dog town to see who could kill the most varmints out of a box of 50. I went either 46 or 48 once. I remember that same day I killed three starlings and wounded another with one shot. They all landed on a fence post and I shot and killed 3 right then and there. The first in line had a small hole in one side and a slightly larger one where it came out of it. The second had a slightly bigger exit wound and the third blew up. We found a clump of meat,a wing and its head. The 4th must've got hit with shrapnel or bone from the other starlings. I was using CCI .17 grain hollowpoints that day. So that may give you an idea of how rapidly those are expanding or coming apart. I believe a v-max wouldn't have made it through two of those birds.
I think a lot of it does depend on the ammunition. I have 20 grain Gamepoints I need to test out on larger bodied critters to see how they perform. Once I do I'll have other experiences to tell about and I may think they're way better than the .22mag. But for less than perfect shot opportunities where I may have to shoot through bone or hit something at a less than ideal angle the .22mag hasn't let me down. I'm not saying I haven't lost animals with it because I have. But it was due to my choice of ammo and not hitting them where I needed to with that type of ammunition or the choice of ammunition as a whole. 30 grain v-max in the .22mag is fine for prairie dogs but too frangible for bigger animals. FMJ's in either cartridge aren't a good choice. I learned that the hard way.
In the accuracy department at longer distances I give the advantage to the .17hmr. For shooting a large raccoon on up to a coyote I believe the .22mag is more adequate. 40 or 45 grain bullets are best for that application. The smaller more fragile bullets need to hit the brain or neck. There's a lot of valuable stuff in both spots. Hit a shoulder with a light, fast, frangible bullet and you may have a surface splash and never recover that animal. But I'll say that for both cartridges.
On another note the .17WSM smokes both of those cartridges.Last edited by okrattler; 11-29-2020, 01:57 AM.

I wasnt sure about hogs but tried it at a junction lease. Same effect. Mostly ear hole shots but I did get one about 60# that took a step and was hit behind the shoulder. Went about 10 yards and fell over

I shot these several years ago with mostly rimfire. .17hmr and .22mag and probably a few were shot with a .22lr. I think there was like 12 badgers in there but couldn't get them all in the picture. I know I ran up on a few of those and popped them with a .22lr but most were taken with the .17hmr and .22mag. 40 grain hp in the .22mag and .17gr. V-Max were used. Only had two raccoons get away after being shot that Winter. Made $800 from the fur buyer.Last edited by okrattler; 11-29-2020, 01:19 PM.
