I have a Leopould vx-3 3x9x40 on my marlin 30-30 and love it. I along with my father and brother have killed many deer with the gun under 200 yards, highly recommend.

The little short 2.5x Leupold compact is THE scope for lever guns. I like aperture sights for walking around during the day, but a scope is much better for early morning and late evening hunting. I also have a rifle rigged with a scout scope. Unless having backup peep sights on the rifle is a priority, I'd just stay with the regular 2.5x compact. It will have more field of view.

I have a Redfield Revenge 2-7x32 with see through rings on my Marlin.
          Very happy with it.

With an older blued finish lever gun, you need a gloss finish scope. Matte scopes just don’t look right on a blued gun.

Leupold is still about the best. I’m quite fond of the FX3 6x on mine. Crystal clear.

If you do some looking, and old Weaver K series and the Redfield wide field scopes are really great for the money.

I have a Vortex Viper 2-7x on my 336. I bought it as they were being discontinued. I wish I would have bought two now.

Have you looked into ss ghost rings? That’s what I’m running on my 336
I too have old tired eyes and have to wear bifocals. The XS works great for me out to 100 yrds or less

I've been tempted to drop a Burris fast fire on my 30-30. Have you considered something like that? It'd be quick like irons and less bulky then a LPV scope.

1-4 or 2-7 if you have to have a scope.

Since you mentioned the EO Tech.
My friend Dave put a red dot on his Marlin Marauder. Ruined his eyes welding with out mask. He says the green dot is good for him. Out of place with the new technology on a 1964 Marlin Marauder in 35 rem, but he hits what he shoots at.
BTW that is the same Marlin of mine on right some years before it got more notches and beat up. I changed the scope a year later to the Redfield which I suggested.
