i wanted a ruger deer stalker 44, but could not find one for sale locally, and i was not buying one blind off the internet....after doing some research i settled on the 458 socom as the best option,, the 45 caliber pistol caliber options use handgun bullets which really are not as likely to hold together at higher velocities,, the 50 beowolf ammo was even harder to find and not that much cheaper, and already loading for the 45-70 i have all the components except the brass....... i will have enough slug and velocity to hammer the big hogs, and more than enough to possibly get multiples with one shot on smaller pigs
Semi-auto shotgun with some buckshot is what you're looking for.

You said you were looking for a "hog buster in heavy cover". For what you're looking for, a shotgun with buckshot is ideal. If you want a Socom then go get one.

i was specifically asking about the 458 socom,, not just anything, ideal for a purpose is different to different people,, the scattergun is not ideal to me, If it were I would have just used one and never posted a question about the 458

Look up .458 diameter bullets and .500 bullets. Theres a lot more choices in .458. 450 Marlin, 45-70 458 Win Mag, 458 Lott, 460 Weatherby are just a few that use those bullets.

So you have the 500 S&W and 50 Beuwolf and maybe 50AE that uses .500 bullets and all the bullets available that I am aware of are pistol bullets.

Pistol bullets driven at rifle velocities are less than ideal IME.

Easy Partner, in both your descriptions of what you were looking to accomplish, a 12 ga with buckshot would be your best option so guys are simply offering solutions to problems you've presented. It sounds like you want a SOCOM regardless of what anybody tells you, good or bad, so go buy it. It's America **** it and your right to do so, but don't get bent when you're the one asking questions and don't like responses. Good luck with the SOCOM and have fun with it.

Almost all the bullets for the 500 SW are designed to work in the 1800-2400fps performance window.

Not all the .458 bullets are designed to work in the same performance window that the .458 SOCOM plays in. I consider it a wash on selection.

It never ends! We just got rid of one sounder, now (a month later)….there is a new group. This is just one area they have rooted up in the pasture (there are others): I have managed to get this group baited into a “lane” between our property and the neighbor. For...
