I dont have the Socom but the 50 beowulf will knock a pig down like a ton of $$%$ inside 100 yards. Its pretty accurate as well. I should 340 grain hollow point handloads. I would think the socom would do the same.

Not that hard. .50 Beowulf aka 12.7X42

It's not exactly a 45-70, but pretty powerful

Op, for the situation you just explained, you might want to consider using a semi-auto 12 gauge and 00 buckshot. It would be much cheaper and more effective than an AR in .458 SOCOM. Now, the AR route would be cooler

That's a good idea. Also, what about an AR10?

                  And for clarification

44 mag. 320gr bullet at 1175 fps (corbon)
44 mag 280gr bullet at 1350 fps (corbon)

                  458 Socom 300gr bullet at 1900fps (corbon)

How does the 44 mag have better performance......just asking while scratching my head.
Quit looking at a 44 mag from a handgun and look at it from an carbine shoulder fired gun. 240gr bullet at 1860 fps, 300gr bullet at 1700 fps does plenty of damage to a hog or anything else. I doubt there is a hog out there that could would complain if it ere shot from m ruger semiauto carbine or a Socom or bushmaster.

Want big in an AR get the 50 Beowulf

Even based on your information the 458 SOCOM hits harder than the .44 MAG

The person that this post was for stated that the .44mag massively outperformed the .458 SOCOM.

I agree with you that the .50 Beowulf is the direction to head.

Both though are pretty much .45-70s in an AR platform.

Understand, I have a few 44 mags, handgun and rifle and never really saw that much difference on game between them and my 45-70. That little Ruger semiauto is fun to hunt with as well with quick follow up shots or other piggies. With the 250gr partitions and 320gr hard cast I have had 2 occasions of two with one shot on pigs up to 120lbs.

Most pigs in one shot for me belongs to a 350 Remington Mag with 3 and the 4th not recovered. Still want to line up a bunch and shoot them with the 50 BMG

The OP wanted exactly what you have, and I do as well. Unfortunately they can be VERY difficult to find as they are not made anymore.

Pigs are not hard to kill if you stay within your performance window of the weapon.

I have killed 7 pigs with #7.5 bird shot. One was over 250# and all dropped in their tracks. All were at ranges of less than 5 yds while quail hunting.

Know what you mean about they really are not that hard to kill (if hit right) they can be tough SOBs if not. the only ones I have killed with shotguns were with buckshot but have no doubt bird shot will work at close range. One place we used to ride around in trucks chasing them down and shooting them out the windows. Buck shot worked well but then we tried the Tarus judges with the Federal buckshot loads for it and that works well and is a lot handier for that application.

Hog traps I use 22 shorts to dispatch them a lot of the time.

I know those little Rugers are hard to find, have had this one over 20 years and they were easier to find back then. Gun Ihave probably killed more hogs with than anything else though is a Marlin 1894 16 inch barreled 357Mag Since I got it I have not hunted much with the Ruger. Thought about selling the Ruger but will probably give it to the Great Nephew for a Mississippi deer rifle.

50 Beuwolf looks and sounds cool but very limited ammo selection or even Bullet selection for reloading.

The 458 Socom is much more versatile in both of these areas. The amount of .458 diameter projectiles is staggering.

this is at least part of it,,, i just dont need or want another 12 ga,,, and i have a fondness for the pump... i have also had some pretty good combat lessons with a shotgun,, which i can run as fast as almost any 12 ga auto,,,, and accurately too,,,, the ar route is certainly more interesting, and few people have the 458 socom,,,

I reload so there are plenty of bullets designed for the .500 S&W that work well.
