I have made my AR in .223 my go to gun. I use it for deer, hogs, varmints. You name it. Its accurate and tough. I like to baby my bolt guns but don't have to worry about scratching up the AR.
We shoot piles of deer and pigs with 6.8SPC. It is a GREAT round. Little recoil. We have kids shoot these rifles all the time. They look big and scary but once they shoot it once, they have all the confidence in the rifle they need. Have them with cans and without. Great round and fun to shoot.
I prefer my bolt guns over my ARs for hunting.
I find that they are more comfortable to carry (less parts sticking out to snag) as well more comfortable to shoot through the scope (bolt guns have a drop at heel).
The bolt guns are also more inherently accurate and almost always come with better factory triggers. My inexpensive Ruger American will out shoot my Colt and higher $$ BCM all day long.
For deer I agree. I hardly ever put a second shot on a deer. However I've probably only killed 4 or 5 deer with a gun in the last decade. I like the AR for pigs a coyotra. Multiple targets and often moving targets. Honestly throwing an AR to my shoulder is as natural as it ever was with a bolt gun or similarly stocked rifle. But that goes with training, repetion and rounds down range. Also too many people don't use a stock or scope mount to make the sight alignment and cheek weld optimal for their style.
I use 6.8's and a .308 lightweight AR-10 while deer hunting in East Texas where a sounder of pigs is more likely to be seen than a shooter buck.
My son has used "his" 6.8 to kill plenty of animals over the last 3 or 4 years.
