How many people are using the AR platform these days to deer hunt with, as well as your caliber? My house was broken into last year and several if my rifles were stolen and I haven't replaced those as of yet. I still have my AR15 and have killed some pigs with it, and it is fun to shoot.

Thought has crossed my mind to put together a 6.8 or 6.5G in an AR platform, or maybe jump up to AR10.

I don't personally hunt deer with an AR platform just because I prefer my bolt rifles. Nothing wrong with it, though. My kids like to use them. If that's what you've got or are most interested in, go for it!

I have killed deer with my 12.5" 300 BO...the 6.8 will work just fine.

I think you will find like most that the AR10 is pretty heavy and gets old after a while...I would rather have an accurate bolt gun. I honestly do not remember the last time I had to take a follow up shot on a whitetail.

Out of the 100's of deer I've shot, I can't recall having to take a follow-up shot. Loved my 22-250 and ,243. A bunch of deer fell to both.

Oh, and I do love a good bolt gun. Just as I get older I guess, change a few things up maybe. Heck, I haven't even shot a deer in past three seasons. Now cant say that for pigs LoL. A bunch fell last year.

I hunt with both of mine. 5.56 and a grendel. Hogs and deer with the 5.56. So far only deer with the grendel. I reload a had terrible performance ( hogs not recovered) with Barnes TSX in the 5.56.

            From personal experience:

The AR15 in 5.56/223, 6.5CM (bolt) and 6.5 Grendel (AR15) will ALL do the job with effective round choice and shooter skill.

But, if you want to stay with the AR platform, my vote hand's down is the 6.5 Grendel! The son's and I had one built and it is so dead on (kill zone) we were amazed. Virtually NO recoil and if we had a CAN on it...well, just a big plus! We have NO experience with the 300 BO, lot's of experience with the 22-20 and 243, love 'em both but BOLT action only!

As for me, I'm not into the AR10 platform anymore, but that's due to age and physical factors. If I could ever find a AR platform in a 22-250 I'd buy it in a second, but they are hard to find and performance with the mechanics has been an issue. 308 in the AR10 is a great firearm, but again for me the weight is an issue. My 6'5" TBH son loves his AR10 (308) but he drools over the 6.5 Grendel I won't give him, lol! I have a buddy in Weatherford that built our Grendel at a price I don't think you can find anywhere. If you want his number send me a pm and I'll be glad to share it.

This is a recent group with the Grendel.....my military son took over after my first shot in the upper right corner...yeah, not good but it is what it is. This was at 100 yards with a Monarch Scope that he gripped about (Leopold) is his choice but he is also "Sniper qualified" and the wind was unreal the day we shot this. Judge for yourself, but again...my choice.

I pretty much only use my ARs to hunt with. I use a 12" 6.8 SPC and a 22" AR creedmoor.

I have a Remington R15 in .30 RAR and it's pretty close ballistics wise to a .308. It's a very accurate and deadly rifle for deer and pigs. I'm sure it would make an adequate elk rifle as well but you would have to hire a sherpa to tote it up the mountain for you.

I kill pigs regular with my 5.56/.223 AR15 guns. But I wouldn't count on blood trails that are easy to follow with the little round. That said I have a really high recovery rate on non head shots.

I kill a bunch of stuff with my 300 blackout SBR and my 6.5 Grendel. I built a 6.8 and just didn't get what all the fuss was about so I sold it.

Don't mind Mike he's anti 6.8 . I don't have mine any more either but it was fine and the arp barrels are **** accurate for the money. There's just nothing flashy about it, doesn't have the SD or bullet selection of the 6.5's. Certainly it outshines the blackout in nearly all instances.

And the .30 Rar is nowhere close to a 308

I'll have feedback to give after this deer season. Used 223/556 on hogs with good success, and pistol caliber carbines for deer hunting, usually a Ruger 99/44 semiauto in 44mag. Picked up an AR10 to try since my boys claimed my deer rifles. Going to do sight in and load work up this week depending on the weather, and the turkey hunting. Don't get weight issue, it doesn't seem any heavier than my 1917 in 30.06, and that gets carried up and down a lot of the "small hills" in KY. I put a much nicer sling on the AR10.

Those hills ain't so small. In fact that area of the country looks like it would kill me to hunt. They are the Rocky Mountains but they are steep.

With a standard .308 150 grain load running 2820 to 2850 fps and a . 30 RAR running just over 2700 fps with a 150 grain bullet I would say that's fairly close.

Have killed more deer with a ar-15 chambered in .223 than any other rifle, bullet choice and shot placement. Also I run a ar10 in .260 that I am deadly out to 650yards with. Any one of those ar15 calibers will work on deer, shot placement is the key for any hunting.
