Colt New Agent is a very nice 1911. I have 5 different brands and it's my favorite.

Oh I agree, they are nice, whatever they are. My sgt carries one. It'll hit steel at 100 yards too.

I have a Sig 1911 Tacops, all black and beautiful. Over 3000 rounds , no malfunctions, still very tight. It also has a rail for light or laser. Best purchase I have ever made.

          Which 1911 do you recommend?

Colt is having problems again. Huge layoffs. Huge focus on govt contracts and lost focus with consumers.

Kimber has real hit and miss quality. CS nightmare stories.
Schwartz safety, not a fan. Claim custom shop but doesn't have a custom shop. Not to mention a plastic mainspring housing.

          Ruger budget platform. Not impressed.

SW he is the only one that does the external extractor correctly in my opinion. With that said I don't personally interest me. It is not the original 1911 platform.

The best bang for your buck to me in that price range is Springfield Armory range officer. It has the original series 70 safety and trigger assembly, just slide the frame fit, good barrel and bushing fit.
Springfield has one of the top notch customer service and custom shop epartments out there.

            I won't own a 1911 with an external extractor...JMB designed it correctly.

Kimber is the best $500 1911 you can pay $1000 for.

STI, Springfield Armory, Colt & Dan Wesson are great choices in and about your price range...

Ruger, SW or Rock Island for that price range. When it comes to 1911s folks get awfully opinionated. I have a rock in 10mm and love it. Plus your son will love a gun from his dad. That's how I sold my wife on the rock island (my sons still a baby )

I've owned a bunch of 1911's (currently have 6), and in the under $1k category, I'd recommend a Smith and Wesson. Springfield Loaded is another good one in that price range, but I think you get more gun for the money with a S&W.

I just bought a sig. I really like it. I have owned other 1911s and so far I am most impressed by sig. I sent it to sig today to get an ambi safety installed. it has external extractor and they have a more square frame than other 19 11 guns. I am not one that buys into the Oh it's not a 1911 if it has this or does not have that nor do u believe JMB designed the perfect pistol. I feel lots of improvements have been made to his design and I feel for under a grand sig and Springfield are the best out there followed closely by Smith

                        1911's

I recently bought my Dad a Colt Competition, Full-Sized for his birthday. He was 101st Airborne in Vietnam and carried a Colt there.

~$850.00 on Gunbroker, came with match barrel, fiber optic sights and I think G10 Blue/Black Grips.

I highly recommend it. It can be used for competition out of the box, but can also be upgraded if your son so desires.

                        Good luck!

I've had several and the best one I owned was a Dan Wesson cbob (got it for little less than a grand back then) I'm STILL kicking myself for selling it...

I've got an older Kimber CDP and if I ever buy another one or replace it, it will be a STI.

Colt or Rock Island gets my vote

I have a Colt Mark IV series 70 and love it. Goes bang every time, very few malfunctions in the 2000 or so rounds I've put through it, and it'll hit man sized steel at 100 yards all day long. Carry it every day and love it. It cost right at a grand.
