I did a bunch of research a couple years ago and ended up with a Springfield Range Officer. It was very nice.

I was going to suggest a STI spartan but it looks like they don't make it anymore.

Agreed. I bought a Colt Delta Elite and couldn't group to save my life. Trigger felt like 8lbs. Look for a quality used higher end pistol and put all your bullets in one hole.

Just watch Gun Broker and start making offers. I picked up my barely used Wilson Xtac for $1200 one evening. I sent the guy a message and he accepted my offer. Look for guns that might have a scratch or two and the prices goes down.

              I agree.
I bought my first Wilson in 2011 off a message board for $800, but deals like yours and mine are very hard to find.

If the OP wants to step up to used semi custom, he will have a better chance of finding a Les Baer in his price range, but even finding a LB for under a grand is going to be a long shot.

In my opinion, Wilson has priced themselves out of the market of most "casual" 1911 guys, but Ed Browns and Les Baers are still pretty good values. I've owned 8 Wilsons and have never owned a new one and never will, but I've never own a new EB or LB either...

Just my opinion, but for a gift, I believe the OP should get the young man a "new" gun, and for his first 1911, I seriously doubt he's going to be very picky. You can get a "bad apple" in every brand of production gun, so I'd say ANY of the previously mentioned brands in this thread would be a good candidate.

Love the 1911 platform. First one was a Taurus, I know it's not a "real" 1911 but it shot lights out. My Kimber Raptor is accurate as can be without any tweaks. I really want to get a Springfield 45 and a STI in 9mm to complete my collection.

Don't forget Para single stacks. I picked one up for $400 the other day and that was at a gun store. Not a bad deal for a Executive Carry model.

No question. Get the real thing. Colt. Have some work done on it - trigger job, beavertail, slide tightened, ramp polish. Or if you have the $$$, a Wilson, such as the X-Tac.

I own two Colts and an STI, I bought my Son a Rock Island Mil-spec for Christmas, he replaced the mags with Chip McCormick and shoots on par with mine in accuracy and reliability.

Springfield. I have the TRP and Range Officer Compact. LOVE the TRP and it's the only gun in my collection that has gone up in price. But it's kinda pricy today. But the Range officer is a good choice.

                          1911 in .45 or 9mm. I suggest .45.

The most fun 1911 I own to burn rounds through is my Springfield range officer in 9mm.

                              Again, get a Colt.
Because everything else is a knockoff.
