      I know everyone is on the 6.5 bandwagon (myself included), but a .308 or even a fast twist .223 may be a better learner gun. You don't want something so unforgiving that you lose interest in it, but cheap to shoot and low recoil (yes, the 6.5 and .260 have less, but not a ton) has its benefits in terms of trigger time.

      My 6.5 is a hunting gun, and I absolutely want something that will drift 3" less and make a hit in the lungs rather than the guts if I read the wind wrong, or it changes. But something that highlights what the wind is doing might be ideal as a range/non-competition gun.

      I shoot Weatherby Vanguards and love them, but the Remington 5R's are a nice turn-key option if they're in your price range.

        Here's a great start to long range shooting, and a smoking good deal IMO at Cabelas.

        Go ahead and throw this one on there too.

        Add on an awesome scope, like this one, and you'll be in business.
