Don't worry about the .308 hate you will get.

A body has to have a sense of humor round these parts. It's not a safe space. [emoji2]

Lots of good info above and I'll add my opinion as well.

The 308 will work but there's way better. I'd go with a 7RM or 6.5 of any flavor. If 30 cal is what you want then go with a 300wm, it does way better with the heavy high bc bullets.

It's really hard to beat the 7RM from a practical standpoint. It's among the smallest of the belted magnums but will run a 180 High BC Berger up to 2950-3000 FPS. IMO-that's the magic number you're looking for. It allows for less dope of wind and elevation plus extends your maximum lethal hunting range. OH, and like the 308, there's a metric ton of loading info out there on it.

If not building a custom, I'd go with the mod 700 5R in 300 WM or a savage.

I agree and there is now a 260 Remington available in the Gen 2 5R.

                              Get geared up for reloading.
Accuracy and $$$ are no brainers for a long range shooter.

Savage is hard to beat for the money and accuracy out of the box.
