There are a lot of suggestions for a 6.5-284. I certainly appreciate the round for what it is but brass can be EXTREMELY hard to come by at times. Anything based on an 06 case has pretty much unlimited brass availability. I form my .280ai brass from winchester .270 brass! I would never marry myself to something with such limited brass options as the 6.5-284.......

I have a Borden built 700 with a sleeved bolt in 6br that shoots 68gr Eubers (yes, I still have some of the originals) Into ragged bug holes that is wicked scary accurate...oddly enough, it was my first deer rifle that used to be a 6rem. It's no light weight & along the lines of the 13.5HV. I made mine for short range accuracy & went with a 1/14, but most will tell you to go with a tight twist to handle a variety of weights. You will love it. Amazing how accurate that round is.

I like the 257 Roberts, 6.8spc & 300BO over the two more popular 24cals for deer & kids guns...

In regards to the OP's choice, the 280AI is it...been shooting one since 1994. It really arguably the best choice for reloaders & the application.

I will say stuff like the 6.5-284 I'm going to be staying away from. I don't want a wildcat just for the sake of having one. Rather a rifle I can build into a mountain style rifle for elk and deer with lighter recoil that the current .270
