    Pistol question

I'm looking to buy a new pistol. My budget is around $400 +/- a couple of bucks of course and I am looking at a 9mm. I've narrowed it down to 3 and they are...

    1. Ruger SR9
    2. Sig Sauer P2022
    3. Springfield XD

I will be using this as a concealed carry as well. I've shot them all except the Sig. What are the Green Screens thoughts on these guns and what would you recommend for that budget? All input is appreciated.

Edit...I was also looking at the S&W M&P 9 but it's $480 and $30 over budget. Is it worth it to spend the extra $30 or go with one of the above.

Look up Bud's Guns. You should be able to find something in your price range.

That was my main source for getting prices. There and Academy.

You could get a police trade in G19 for around $400. That would be a far better choice than the above.

Out of the ones you listed, I'd go with the Sig. I prefer striker fired guns but The Sig would be the better choice compared to the others.

Ruger Centerfire pistols leave a lot to be desired. they should stick to .22s and wheelguns. Or finally figure out how to make a centerfire pistol that doesn't suck.

The XD has it's issues too. The grip safety is a huge deal breaker for me. There's no reason for it at all. There's also reliability issues with both the XD and Ruger when put to good use. I'm not able to trust either.

Another option your range would be the M&P9c or FS.

I'd strongly recommend looking into a used Glock or M&P. They will serve you better in the long run.

Thanks for the info. I'll check out the M&P. They are $480 new at Academy. Not really looking for a compact. The only reason I do not want a Glock is no safety.

Except for the three safeties on it?

I was always told they didn't have a safety switch so, I never looked in to them. I'll look in to this more. Thank ya.

Glocks have 3 safties. They won't go off unless your finger presses the trigger. The only time your finger should be anywhere near the trigger is when your sights are on target and you've made the decision to shoot.

How does a thumb safety on a striker fired gun make it any safer?

It seems that "safety" is giving you a false sense of security. Keep your finger off the trigger and you'll never have a problem.

The XD doesn't have a thumb safety either.

Very good point, made and as you mentioned you're not a fan of the grip safety and that's what I was thinking of with the XD. Thanks for the additional input Ike, it is always appreciated. Are you still doing the CHL classes? Can you suggest a good place I could go and try out several different models and sites or stores for used guns? I live in Pasadena and I'm familiar with location of The Arms Room.

I have a SR9 and have no complaints at all. I prefer it to my son's Springfield XD...it is a good handgun too I just don't care for the "feel".

Sure thing. It seems that people freak out over the glock not having any safties and they actually have 3. I think most just don't understand how the system works and that it's safe.

Many folks like that false sense of security that they think a thumb safety gives.

The most effective safety is trigger finger discipline. Keep it out if the trigger guard until you are ready for the bullet to leave the muzzle. On certain guns (glock, m&p, XD) a thumb safety is not necessary and shouldn't be even offered on a gun. It doesn't make it any safer and it only adds another failure point.

1911s have to have a thumb safety. It's part of the design and the gun would be unsafe without it.

I like my guns to go off when I press the trigger and not go off if I'm not pressing it. Which is why I hate magazine safeties and grip safties. The grip safety on the XD prevents you from firing the gun in awkward shooting positions or when you're fighting over the gun.

I'm still doing classes but just private ones for now.

The arms room is probably your best bet to try out some different guns. It'd be best if you could find a buddy that would let you borrow one. It takes more than a few dozen rounds to really see how a gun will be. It may feel and shoot one way at the range but after you get more hours and rounds behind it you may find you don't like it as much or the gun you didn't like at first starts to grow on you.

I used to hate Glocks. My opinion was based on 100 rounds through a G17 and my own lack of knowledge on what's important in defensive weapon.

Several years ago I decided to get off my high horse and actually really try one out. I found out that I shoot Glocks really well and have grown to really really like them.

Sometimes you just have to try more than a few boxes of ammo on a gun.

Also, don't get too caught up on how the gun feels. Ergonomics are important but they're lower in the list.

When choosing a gun here's the top things I look at.

                        -Reliability
                        -availability of parts/ holsters etc
                        - magazine capacity

Find a few that fit that criteria and then decide out of those based on how it feels, shoots, etc.

For used guns try TBH, Buds, AIM surplus.

There's always deals to be had.

So, did I miss where the 3 safeties on the Glock?

                            1. Finger on trigger
                            2.
                            3.

After Ike's post mine is just a little crumb, but I hated the trigger on the one & only M&P that I have shot. It's DAO, I guess. Trigger travel is a mile long every shot. On my SW99 compact, only the first trigger pull is long, if the gun is uncocked.
