    Oddball calibers

Why must I love them so?

I am in the process of building a 6.5-06 AI,

I just fell in love with the .244 AI (Yes, I meant .244, and not .243) and the 6x284 for varminter purposes (4000-4300 fps with varmint bullets, WOOOOO!!!)

ARRRRG!! My expensive hobby is made more expensive by my taste in rounds... Oh well.

I saw a 22x284 that was priced right with dies and brass. It caught my attention and then I talked myself out of it. I like the oddballs myself.

I feel your pain. I like some of the odd calibers too.

I try to balance it out with some of the more popular ones.

I have been contemplating a 17 build. I thought 17-223 since I have access to plenty 223 brass (people just leave at range after local LEO quals). I like 17 cal because where I hunt foxes and cats are main targets along with occasional badger and yote. Only thing holding me back is fire forming, never done it before.

I actually have one of these. I need to reload some rounds and take it to the range.

It was also a benchrest rifle. 30" barrel and extremly heavy. He claimed it was well over 4000 fps, but since it was at a pawn shop he had no other info on it.

                    I do need to build a 6xc and a 6.5saum.

A buddy has a 300 wsm AI that screams. Awesome gun

one of my best friends and mentors (now deceased ) achieved over 5200 fps with his custom 22x284

he did all the load development and published data for Mike Bellm - custom TC builder

He did say in the neighborhood of 5000 fps, but I thought that was too insane to say it on here.

Just run 223 brass through a 17-223 full length die and your done, fire forming is not required for this particular conversion.

Fire forming is easy and only needed if you need to expand some part of the case that dies can't reform. Generally, you would use a 90% load with the bullet touching the lands. There are other ways but I found this is the easiest way and achieves the most amount of keepers. Some wildcats require annealing the case, my K-hornet falls into this category. I've got my annealing process down to 10 seconds a case and only cost $50 for the setup.
