    7.62x39 for hunting

What are y'all experiences with the 7.62x39 for deer and hogs? I only buy hollow points and soft points for my AK, but recently saw a YouTube ballistic gel vid where they both fail to expand.

I found some PPU 123 grain round nose soft points that looks to be the ticket for a good, mid range caliber for deer and hogs. The ballistics is almost identical to the 30-30. What say yeah?

The AK as you see has bad ballistics. Speed is everything a bullet perform with higher speeds. The AK rounds will kill anything just like a .22LR, I wouldn't use one on a deer but great for hogs at $0.20 per round.

I say go for it. I use a 300BLK and the ballistics on it seem to be close to the 7.62x39. The pigs I have shot didn't run far, they just died. Disclaimer: I haven't shot ANY pigs over 100 yards with my BLK, most in the 60-80 yard range.

I've shot a truckload of hogs with my AK's using HP ammunition and only lost one that I didn't look for, I cleaned 6 that morning.

That PPU round looks gtg, I wouldn't worry about it and just get to poppin critters. I also would have zero problems shooting a deer with one.

You are going to struggle to find reliably expanding bullets in the 7.62 x 39. It was never designed as a hunting round.

The difference is there are bullets specifically designed to expand at the lower velocities of the 300BLK.

The 30.06 was never designed to be a hunting round, either. But it adapted quite well.
According to PPU website, that round I posted is. I'll do some bubba backyard ballistic test on it this weekend to see how the expand.

That's what I'm hoping. I love their .223 ammo. The soft points preformed really well from the YouTube ballistic gel vid I watched. Hoping for the same results.

I have a little single shot 7.62X39 that I use as a guide gun on the Operation Orphans hunts. Shooting cheap russian hollow point ammo every kid that has shot a deer recovered it in less than 50 yards.........it works fine.

I love the AK for hogs, they tend to drop dead when hit with $.20 silver bear FMJ. I have an Arsenal SGL-21 set up as a day/night hog gun, and it's great for what it is. I wouldn't use it with any kind of ammo to shoot a deer.
Even shooting from a bench rest, I have not seen consistent accuracy out of my AK at 100 yards. Your results may vary.

I know this because I used to be in the business. The "hollow points" that are typically being sold for the 7.62x39 are not real hollow points. They are basically a FMJ with the tip cut off.

Tula Manufacturer that makes "Wolf" etc, needed a way to import "sporting" ammo into the US so, viola, they made "hollow points", soft point etc. They are not the same quality as US manufactured ammo for standard calibers.

Yes, I know it will kill a hog/deer/coyote yada yada yada......but a Remington 700 shooting a Barnes Triple Shock, it aint.
