Get two rubber bands and a piece of notebook paper or copy paper.

Loosely wrap the fsb with the paper, with the fsb centered. Then place a rubber band around the edges on each side of the paper to secure it to the gun.

Fire the gun. If the paper gets blown away from the barrel in any way, you have a gas leak. Loosen the fsb and realign and retest.

    Simple as that.
OK, once the FSB is determined to be out of adjustment how to you get back into adjustment?

I had one do this and made several adjustments that never seemed to help. Without being able to see what I was trying to line up it seemed hit or miss. I took it to a gunsmith who disappeared into a back room for about 5 minutes and came back ready to test fire and it worked perfect so he had some method of knowing it was lined up.

My 6.8 had a similar issue. It turned out to be the mags I was using. The springs where not stiff enough and would FTF properly. Depending on how fast my AR would cycle the round would end up not feeding properly. I bought different mags and have never had a FTF since.

My rock river will lock smooth up up after about 1-2 mags of steel ammo.. I bet money the laquer off the steel gummed ur action. Get a Ar chamber brush and clean the crap out of it.
If its not that then its gas Block prolly.

Loosen it up and recenter. I'm sure there is some type of super technical way to do it but I've just always gone by look and touch to get it done.

Short stroking and FTE is usually a gas problem not an ammo problem.

Keep ar's super wet and run all the steel you want through them. I've shot thousands of rounds of steel with very few problems.

remove the hand guard, place magwell block in the magwell and level the weapon in a vice with a level. note the FSB alignment and gas tube to the bbl centerline and adjust accordingly. if it is a gas block, level the weapon as before, the level the gas block. ensure screws are secure and tight when completed.

How many shots have been fired thru the gun? Gas tube may be dirty also. My AR's (PSA & DPMS) will eat any ammo like candy. My Rock River AR-10 will jam without brass.

I've shot hundreds of steel through my Spikes. I plan to shoot some steel through my Colt SBR and suppressor this afternoon.

                    Amen..

I want my weapons to cycle any ammo I give it.
All of my guns will run
Brass and Steel equally - flawlessly.

What about fore and aft adjustment?

if the barrel is within specs, there is a stop that the block butts up against and can go no further forward. this also calls into question the diameter of the gas port on the barrel if the FSB/gas block is actually installed correctly.
