And you still come back to the Leo argument. I AM A GUN SHOP OWNER. Now I guess I'm wrong for using common sense and ballistic stats. Hell I need to give up my license cause I don't know what I'm talking about. Yes your gun shop is wrong and he needs to do some research. I have 2 40 shields and it's amazing my so deputies favor the 9 when I show them the stats and you get an extra round. We are not forcing views. We are just giving stats

We could. But the 9s wouldn't do anything. No knock down power.

Petty - Handloading Editor of Guns magazine - on the .40 S&W and the last part of the paragraph says "Today the .40 S&W is the pre-eminent cartridge of American law enforcement and it is estimated that 75% of new guns sold to law enforcement agencies are chambered for it".

If you and oneton can supply some information that contradicts that, I'll forward it to Nosler and Guns magazine to inform them their writeup wrong so they can correct it. Thanks.

Dude you are fighting a losing battle because you are wrong. You keep talking about what LEO carries, everyone else is talking about how they perform when you shoot someone. Most folks could care less what a cop carries, they want to carry what they can stop someone with and shoot the best.

BTW, I say 9. I have been a die hard 40 guy for a while, but since I have been shooting more a 9 is just hard to beat. For me at least I shoot it better, its cheaper, holds more ammo and is just the better choice for me.

So I got screwed by my buddy (TX State Trooper) AND my gunsmith (both of which are friends BTW). They talked me into buying a SIG in .40 S&W with the extra .357 Sig barrel when all I really wanted was a Colt .45 or 9mm Glock!

Or did I do right?!? I have no idea!!

All I know, is I'm out of popcorn now and the football game is starting. Guess I'll eat crackers instead.

At the beginning of this novel, the OP was asking about whether he should get a 9 or a .40. All I did was say When you go to the gun shop, ask the sales person to open up a box of 9mm and a .40 S&W and then decide which one you want to save your life. Actually, awhile back I went to a gun dealer to buy a Springfield XD 9mm. The salesman opened a box of 9mm and .40 S&W and asked me that same exact question. I'm should call him Monday and tell him he was wrong.

Then Mikey thought it was necessary to belittle me on a public forum. I didn't realize there were so many liberals on this forum trying to force their views on everybody and ridicule them if they didn't. I thought people were allowed to have a choice. Oh wait a minute, our administration is wanting to take our freedoms and choices away. I'll just get in line with the other sheep.

It was asked why I'm so enamored with what caliber law enforcement carries. That was stupid of me to think just because the police seem to favor .40 for their protection, in a highly stressful job with a potential for danger everyday, they've got it wrong. They should listen to the recommendations here and trade them in for 9mm.

                      Happy New Year!
It seems like nothing anyone has said makes it through your head. No one is losing any sleep over what you carry, they were simply pointing out that its not the best choice, so don't push your views on someone asking the question, just like you claim everyone else is doing. That's liberal thought "processing" at its best. Form your opinion over some piece of useless information, and refute or ignor all the facts that contradict it.

LEO's carry .40 because that's what they are issued. They don't have a choice. Many guys that carry a .40 on duty carry 9mm off duty because they prefer it. The .40 was a government pet project, they are going to milk it.

Second point, which you continue to miss, is that the recoil and magazine capacity difference is small in a full size handgun such as LEO's carry, while it increases in the sub-compact handguns most of us conceal carry. My Sig 229 .40 is a pussycat to shoot, just like my 9.5 lb Weatherby .30-06. But I wouldn't want a 3.5" barrel 16 oz .40 any more than I would want a 6 lb .30-06 mountain rifle to go shoot praire dogs with.

Just get a .45acp. That's where knockdown power came from! Everybody knows that.

I've been told, that when you shoot someone with a 45, even if you just hit their toe, they explode into 1,000 pieces and just vanish! That's how powerful this round is. It's outstanding!

Another guy at my local gun shop pulled out a 9mm and 45 and asked which one I'd rather use to defend myself...He said that after been shot with a 45 the wound channel is so massive you can literally see clear through the guy!

You don't even need hollow points! The size alone of the bullet is massive enough to cause wicked amounts of damage. Upon impact the bad guy is literally thrown 20 feet back in the air. Yeah. It's THAT powerful!!

And the bullet is traveling at like 900 feet per second! That's like twice as fast as my bow and at least 5 or 6 times faster than I can run. Maybe even faster. It's gotta be close to the speed of light or something. I mean 900fps!!! That's crazy fast! It's like high speed internet, only, it's in your gun!!!

It truly is an amazing round!

Yeah, you want knockdown power? Go with the 45!

I would never thought I would be accused of liberal thought processing based on my current views, (and my avatar). And I am trying to be open minded. I stumbled across this article which supposedly an unbiased view of firearm related shootings - which would include a significant amount of domestic shootings as well. The 9mm data results are listed right above the .40 for an easy comparison. The 9mm has a higher number of usage probably because I believe it's the favored caliber for criminals, drug dealers, gangbangers, etc.

So since the - % of fatal hits, # shots until incapacitation, one stop shots, "accuracy", % actually incapacitated by one shot - all seem to favor the .40, I wonder if the reason is the majority of those using 9s like to hold their weapon sideways so they look cool, thereby leading to more inaccuracy and may be the root cause the .40 outperforms the 9mm in this 10 year study? Thanks. (A shotgun with buckshot seems to work really well)!

by Greg Ellifritz I've been interested in firearm stopping power for a very long time. I remember reading Handguns magazine back in the late 1980s when Evan Marshall was writing articles about his stopping power studies. When Marshall's first book came out in 1992, I ordered it immediately, despite the fact that I was a college student and really couldn't afford its $39 price
