What you said about getting some of the velocity back with the few extra inches from the can is exactly what I was thinking.
300 yards with a short action cartridge from a 16” barrel and can is very little different than a 24 without a can.

if you are anywhere near Sugar Land you are welcome to shoot some of mine.

My APR 6.5 is 22 and its long with an omega on it. I carry it and thread on when I get in the blind. Wifes APR 7.08 is 20 and does well. My other 'longer gun' is 18'' .223 and seems about right

My main hunting rifle with suppressor is 18”. I wish it were about 2” shorter and I definitely don’t want anything longer. I am shooting a shorter Ti can as well.

It’s an extra tax stamp unless you go with an integral but my longest is 14” with 8” of baffles. My shots on game never exceed 150 yds though.

            I killed a bull elk with a 16” 308 at 320 yards 1 shot dropped him.

22 inch .308 with a 7.6” silencerco omega 36 m suppressor. It is long and hard to move around in blinds but I never felt that shorter was absolutely necessary. However my next gun I will get in an 18” barrel so I can run same length suppressor and be the length for a normal rifle.

08 & Creedmoor length cartridges do fine with shorter barrels as they generally run faster burning powders and don't need the barrel length...I run 16" on my 308 and 18" on my 338 Federal and 6mm Creed and grab those rifles more than any. Magnums utilize slower burning powders and running shorter will have larger losses of velocity per inch than 08 based...a 20-22" length is a good compromise but have seen some 18" 6.5 PRC's that work well but you have to realize on magnums you start to handicap the cartridge with every inch.
For 95% of shots people routinely take inside 300yds in TX you wont notice a huge difference and inside a blind shorter has a lot of functional utility...past that the ethical answer is get a chrono and know your drops.

                  I cut my .223 and 30-06 to 18”. I like them both.

We try to keep our guns at 18" with suppressors. This is mostly for predator guns at night where we are not super concerned with losing FPS. We did leave a .204 at 22" and a 6.5 creed at 22" and they are fine as long as you aren't taking them in and out of the truck constantly.

I spend way too much time researching and shooting different barrel lengths through chronos. If you want to cut a magnum down below 22" it is easier and cheaper just to drop to a non-magnum. If I wanted to cut say a 300 WM to 20" I can just drop to a 30-06 and get essentially the same ballistics in a lighter platform. I see 17-30 fps loss depending on caliber when cutting barrels down per inch. With handloads I can make that difference up in a non-magnum or get very close.

So you think with a 7mm Rem. Mag. I should leave the barrel length as it is and just deal with it? Assuming of course I want to use a magnum caliber.

I depends on what you're chasing. If you chase velocity then 24-26" is ideal. If, like me, you prefer maneuverability with a can on the end, then I would go 22". You can still be in the 2900ish fps range depending on bullet weight and maintain more than 1000-1200 ft lbs of energy beyond 500 yards.

When I instruct, I say never train for the 1%, train for the 99%. So, if you plan to use the 7 Mag on say elk, once or twice, then go short with can and use a 140-160 Nosler Accubond or alike bullet.

My 270 wsm with 22" Carbon 6 barrel and can pushes 140 gr accubonds at 2950 fps easily. I shot a big mature cow elk at 424 yards. Perfect pass through and exit. She made it 50 yards.

Oh. Well this would just be for beefier whitetails in northeast TX. If I ever went elk hunthing I'd probably get a .300 Win. or something similar.

ive been trying to research similar for the same can. I love my 25-06 and dont want to change guns. Its 22. Im def going to have it cut to 20 when i have it threaded. I think between the can and cut, i wont change much velocity. However, i am thinking of cutting to maybe 18.5 for maneuverability but have read that with the 25 its a big hit going under 20", but cant find where anyone has actually posted speeds. Ill probably never shoot over 200, so will lose some of the 2506 performance, but still plenty to take a deer id think. I do handload, so i can play with powders for speed. I just dont want to be sending a bunch of hot unburnt powder into the can

Yeah. I'm starting to think I'll just thread them and leave the barrel lengths alone, deal with things as they are.
