Shorter the better! I’m thinking about a 13-14” 308 with a pinned brake to make it 16” so I don’t have to stamp it.

Im def going to have it cut to 20 when i have it threaded. I think between the can and cut, i wont change much velocity. However, i am thinking of cutting to maybe 18.5 for maneuverability but have read that with the 25 its a big hit going under 20", but cant find where anyone has actually posted speeds. Ill probably never shoot over 200, so will lose some of the 2506 performance, but still plenty to take a deer id think. I do handload, so i can play with powders for speed. I just dont want to be sending a bunch of hot unburnt powder into the can
A good test is to pull up load data online for similar bullet weight and look at a powder burn rate chart...if asking for anything slower than H4350/H4831 I would have a hard time dropping below 22" as you lose more fps per inch. Overbore cartridges like a 25-06 and magnums use slower powders that need barrel length to get full burn. I plugged a 25-06 with 115 Berger into Quickload and from 26" to 20" barrel it lost 250-280 fps depending on powder. A 25 Creedmoor for comparison only dropped about 180-200 fps from 26" to 20" and was almost equal to the 25-06 at 20" with the same bullet.
As a handloader, I tend to slide up the powder burn rate chart a bit with shorter barrels as the slow stuff just spits more unburned powder into the can. I also look for higher BC bullets so that even with lower velocity they tend to retain it further down range. I built my son an 18" 6.5 Grendel for his first rifle because it has almost no recoil suppressed...I loaded up 127gr LRX's at 2405fps which doesnt sound like much but with 0.468 BC they keep it over 1k pounds of energy to 300yds which is more than he will shoot at 8yrs old, and they hammer.
