    Barrel length with suppressor?

I'm in the process of getting my first can, a Scythe-Ti, and I'm super stoked. I'm going to have to either get my rifles threaded or completely rebarreled, but I was wondering if I need to be using a shorter barrel now? This thing is 6.6" long, so I don't suspect I should leave the barrels as they are, but I wanted the opinion of the GS braintrust. If it matters I've got a 7 mag, .243, and 7mm08 that will be used with this. I've got a 25-06 too, but apparently I can't get a Proof carbon barrel for this gun for a Tikka.

These will be used from deer blinds, not stalking or anything like that.

    What say y'all?

I have a 300PRC with a 26" barrel. I call it my boat paddle. Its super long with the suppressor. I took it elk hunting this year and will have another barrel on it before I do that again.

In all reality unless you have a 22" or shorter barrel then anything is going to be "long" when having a suppressor, its just a sacrifice. You mentioned having a 7-08, that is something that still works well in shorter barrels so you could have it cut down to 18-20" and make it more manageable with a suppressor. The longest barrel I use my suppressor on is 24" and even then its can be difficult to maneuver, depending on the situation.

Someone else kind reminded me that a magnum caliber, like my 7 mag, needs that extra barrel length to burn the powder and maximize its potential, so that one I may just leave alone.

20 inch barrel with a suppressor, i don’t like it any longer than that.

            Including magnums?

Depends on the magnum really. I cut my 7mag from 26” down to 22” for suppressor use and lost about 75fps on velocity, which was less than expected but a 7mag is on the mild side as far as magnums. Now something like a 28 Nosler or the ultra mags need those long barrels.

I cut most of my rifles down when I threaded them with the exception of one.
My .204 Ruger I left at its full 26" and just cut off enough to thread and recrown. But I wanted all the speed I could squeeze out of it still.
Anything short action gets cut down to 16" .308, .243, etc With exception being my high velocity varmint rifles. .22-250, .204 Ruger etc...
Long action stuff I keep around 20"
Magnums I like around 22-24" My 7 mag is at 22" and is a good happy medium and is my mountain and backpack hunting rifle, my .257 Wby mag is at 24" just because I wanted that little extra velocity out of it.

I think you will want 22” or below. I have a 22” 300 Win Mag and it’s great. I just wouldn’t want anything longer than that.

I also cut down a 22-250 to 19” and it has been great so far.

How far are you going to shoot? It’s a major factor in the discussion. A can will add back some of your velocity with a shorter barrel.

                    I can tell you that a 243 and 7-08 with 16” barrel is great. I’d go 20” on a 7Mag.

Mostly inside of 100 yards, but sometimes 250 - 300.

What you said about getting some of the velocity back with the few extra inches from the can is exactly what I was thinking.

Our 6.5 CM, 243 and .270 are all cut and threaded to 16.5”. Much lighter and less cumbersome in the blind or truck.

Short barrel with suppressor has not affected the performance on hogs or deer yet.
We are close range shooters, but my buddy used my rifle to kill a coyote near 400 yards with the 6.5

I really like 18", pretty much don't shoot any of my other rifles anymore even though they're threaded they just look silly. For 300 yards the speed is pretty much irrelevant, most of those calibers you mentioned will keep minimum velocity much longer than that with super short barrels. I killed a massive cow elk with my 18" 6.5 CM a couple weeks ago, muzzle velocity roughly 2550 fps, no issues.

I cut a 7mag down to 18" and put a YHM can on it. I was still getting right at 2700fps with the can and it kicked like a .243. My 22 Creed is 16.5" and all of the 6.5 Creeds were 16.5".

I tried to "like" the 6.5-300 with a can on it full length but it's just too much to be functional in a blind.

I have a Bergara Squared Crest Carbon 7PRC with a 22" barrel, and that is as long as I would go if I could help it. Some of my older rifles with longer barrels I've had threaded, but they don't get used often. As mentioned above it really depends on caliber and barrel twist. 7-08, .308, 6.5 calibers, etc. you can still get great performance out of shorter barrels.
