    Diabetic Meals

I am trying to educate myself on what I can eat and what I can not. It is pretty hard to cook for one person and not waste a ton of food. I hate left overs as well. Anybody care to share a few diabetic recipes or meal ideas?

Low Carb tortillas, pizza sauce, pepperonis, cheese. It goes together to make a pizza. And a pretty good one at that.

I can hook you up with my Dad. He can certainly provide some insight.

Heath, when we found out I had diabetes my wife found some pretty good cook books for diabetics. A lot of them are easy to make and durn good eating too. I'll find out which ones we have and let you know.

Heath, just watch the carbs and starches. You can still have a big ol ribeye, just have corn and green beans instead of a baked potato.

Make simple substitutions to the food you already like, then start looking for new stuff.

Corn is high in sugar, geen beans are called free food and so are most veggies not corn. Cut you bake potato in half. the best thing about it is you eat smaller plates but more often. keep lots of your raw veggies on hand and make that your snack foods. It is hard work to get started but once you do it is not bad. Drinking was the hardest part for me if you drink eat and eat the good stuff your snack foods and only dring one drink every two hours you can put your sugar out the roof if you do not watch it. ASorry did not mean to go over load, I am on meds for this to and have been for some time and came close to the end when I found out that I was blood sugars where over 650. way to high. Any way anything I can do to help let me know. God bless you Heath.

Yeah, you're right. Corn just popped into my head while I was typing. Still its not like you can never have corn again, its more of a balancing act.

            Good advice above!

My memory is failing me right now, but there are several fresh fruits to avoid as well except on an occasional basis.

Heath, I am not, but, I can help you out, remember it's all about maintaining an even kill all day. Try not to spike up and down, for the most part all green vegetables are a free for all.

Corn is higher in sugar than most fruits actually, try to avoid at all cost.

Lean protein is your friend, even semi-lean.

From what I remember correctly you want to keep your carbs below about 30 grams per day if at all possible.

              Cheese, lean meats, green veggies.

I bought 3 different books of diabetes... i read them and then came up with what I thought worked best for my life style... what i ended up doing was eating about 4 oz of meat 1/2 cup of startch and 1 cup of veggies... I would eat bran cereal w/ a packet of sweet and low for breakfast and then fit something into that format for lunch and dinner, i would also snack on almonds or something like that between meals...the one that worked best for me was Quick and easy diabetic meals... it has some menus, some reciepes in it... it also has ways to compensate for days that you "cheated"... I've lost about 25 lbs since I found out last yr and have kept it off, i still need to lose some more, but w/ proper planning it's not that bad...

Thanks for all the advice. Everything is going really well right now and the diet stuff is not to bad. My dietitian gave me some great advice and I am following it really good. So far my blood sugars are from 90-100 when I check them throughout the day. The hardest part for me is planning meals with my schedule and I hate leftovers. I have also quit drinking all alcohol as well.

when I pack my lunch, I pack snacks like cheese stix, boiled eggs, the snack packs with baby carrots, 100 calorie snack packs like ritz, oreos, cheez its. Try to eat a little something every 3-4 hours. The grocery stores sell single serving canned veggies now. usually can find em 2 fer $1.00.

I try to cook several chicken breasts, pork chops or hamburger patties on the grill, then vacuum seal them and throw them in the fridge. when its time to eat. get out a patty, a small can of veggies, slice up a tomato and wash it down w/ a diet DP!!

Sugar free jello puddin for dessert.

I was diagnosed last april with diabetes and it was nervous at first, but as long as you just space your high carb meals out and watch your cholesterol is the main thing, but my meals haven't really changed other than i don't go to fast food places any more and i stay away from the candy aisle.

You will learn to read the ingredients labels. Be careful of some of the things that are used as a sweetner in sugar-free snacks/candies. Sorbitol is not my best friend- it acts as a laxative for some and I happen to be one of those.

I have also given up Hard Liquor but may I sugest red wine?I have found that red wine with my evening meal doesn't effect my blood sugar, some actually lowers your blood sugar and its heart healthy.

Keep in mind that all red wines aren't the same.Had to try a few brands() before I found one that didn't mess with my blood sugar.

Try and stick to drinking only water. Avoid soda, sweeten tea. And walk. Then walk more. Do you test your blood sugar?

I really watch my carbs , and eat cashews or soy nuts for a snack. Also watch eating grapes or most fruits. Apples seem to be the best to snack on. A handful of grapes gives you as much sugar as a bottle of coke.
