Well Carnage and I set foot yesterday morning at about 6:15 a.m. at the water treatment area (trail marker #15) and headed west as morning time we were going to have western breeze changing to northwest by noon. I was never over on that side pig hunting and there is a lot to cover.
As we headed west there was a lot of rooting and pig sign all along the trail and I it was so fresh I swear we were going to run up on them around the next bend, well that never happened (don't know where that bacon ran off too). We continued up to the camp ground and there were some people camping with three dogs we tried to go around them however the dogs got rawled up and woke the camper (our bad for going so close / there bad for sleeping
).
We continued past the campsite and worked our way close to private land looking for hogs still headed west and we came across a nice shooter buck (looked to be a nice 8 with short brow tines and very impressive G-2 and G-3 also was pretty wide I would say it was about 18 in however Carnage said it look wider than that (then again ask Carnage how much 12 inches is and he will hold his hands about three feet apart). We watched this buck for about 10 mins and there were three doe in the area that he was wanting to service however they are not ready just yet it it a couple more weeks and they will be right for the taken.
Once I waived at the buck to let him know that we busted him before he busted us they went on there way and so did we and came on another area and we were beating the brush and we kick up two more doe, we were starting to get some action hear because before the buck and three doe we didn't see jack.
We continued west and continued checking brush piles and we came onto this one and Carnage made the sign to me he could smell the pigs (we communicate a lot by sign) we circled the pile and Carnage signaled for me to move around and I was concerned as the wind was to my back
and was going straight for the pile, I did and sure enough they busted out of there like there was no tomorrow (one big sow 140#, three good size hogs 100#, two or three 30# and about four 5#) you guest it no shots, they busted directly away from us and couldn't get it done.
We split up and went after them as they seemed to break up into two groups, the sow and the piglets went east and the other ones went west, we searched for them and those little bastxxds are good at hiding. At this point we were past the primitive boat launch and it was around 11:30 a.m.
We decided to head back as most of you that have taken that trail it is a little bit of a hike so we decided to hunt our way back and we stopped along the campsite and apologized to the campers (by the way the trail we started out on # 15 and when you get to the camp site it is# 40 you do the math it is a hike) So we continued back and stopped to check another area with no results and as we are walking down the trail Carnage say to me he would not be surprised if there is a buck off in the brush looking at us saying look at those two hunters just walking by us and low and behold we seen a doe and then shortly after a small buck (mid day I mind you 12:30) so once again guys the buck are getting ready to get really cray. So with closing we had a good day of hunting and I learn another part of Granger lake.
