I would spend the extra money on the alluminum Summit stands. They are only about 6 lbs lighter, but it sure feels much lighter when on your back. I bought the Classic and once put together, returned it for the lighter version. They also now have one for bowhunters that enables the front bar to fold down.
    good luck!

Where i hunt in the SHNF, i've seen three stands that were up all bow season and still up now. one of the stands uses the screw in foot pegs so it's even more illegal than the long past 72 hour other stands. early in the season i noticed one of the stands was baiting so i called the game warden. he had basically no interest in the stands in the woods and only a mild interest in the one that was baiting. i stopped caring about it, and since i only hunt weekdays have never seen the owners, but if i do we will get along fine as long as they realize; leaving their tree stand in the woods does not save the spot for you

Climbers are really good when you have a bunch of trees to choose from. My 2nd choice is lock ons but we have to have our stuff out when we are not hunting. It is dangerous trying to hang that stuff in the dark though.

Yeah, I am looking at the climbers, might work up a little more sweat setting it up, but I think it would be easier to pack in and out than a chain on with a ladder.

I roll in a lightweight tripod on a game cart, cart comes in handy for the deer also. I like having the flexibility to set up anywhere.

                    X2

I use the Summit Viper SS, works well and real easy to setup in the dark.

So I have found several stands in my area, but they have been there for years. Is it ok to take them down? I really don't want to get the GW involved (he is busy enough)
The stands can stay up there they are not hurting us at all, but every once and a while we have someone new walk through our area and I wouldn't want them to see the stand and think that they should come hunt it.

I would take them down. The stands by me are all new...but stands left out in the woods and obvious trails that lead right to them, only encourages the weekend warrior who stumbles into your area to set up shop there

there is a bunch in the south archery only section, and I mean a BUNCH! I probably counted atleast 12 of them, and most of them homemade wooden ones, and even a few ladder stands!

The forest service has an officer that will come take down stands. Call the forest office and give them the GPS coordinates and they will come get it. The GW typically does not get involved with tree stands. Now if you find bait, that is another story.

I hear ya. If I don't have a GPS to get coordinates, then I might as well just take them down and put them near the road and tell him where they are.
