Tree stands on Public Land

Was also wondering about using tree stands on public land. Next year will be the first year I have hunted public land in Texas. Thanks.

I've had my lock on stand up through all of bow season and have left my climber out overnight a few times. Havn't had anybody mess with them yet but think I'll take my steps down at least once general season starts.

They are needed in the thicker forests.

The rules say there cannot be any "permanent" stands on public land. Personally, I don't leave anything out there I can't afford to lose.

You can use them you just can't leave them over a certain time limit. You have to check each properties rules and regulations. Some are 72 hours. I always take mine out every night.

Many state that you cannot penetrate the bark. So no screw in steps or bolt on stands. I use ladder sticks and rachet straps to hold mine on. I also chain them to tree and lock them. If someone wants it they could cut the chain , but it keeps an Honest man Honest.

Looking at hunting Granger for hogs, and was looking at Sam Houston for deer. I am new to hunting in Texas and public land. Thanks in advance for all the info.

I have used climbing stands in Sam Houston before. Like every one else has said, don't leave anything overnight that you can't afford to lose. Climbers are easy to pack in and out, so that might be your best bet.

Can't beat a quality LIGHT WEIGHT climber like the Summit Viper SS or a Lone Wolf sit and climb. I have the Lone Wolf and have owned the Summit; both are great for public land in my opinion.

x2 on the lone wolf sit and climb. I hunt the SHNF almost exclusively and I use my lone wolf when I am gonna pack my stand out. I also have spots that are way....... down in there that I may leave my older, cheaper climber there. I don't really want it stolen but better it than the lone wolf. I have never had anybody molest it. I doubt it was ever found I hunt pretty far and usually dissasemble it and cover it with brush when I leave.

Every area has different rules. Access times, entry points, seasons. type of weapon. There all different. Pick your area on this site.

This is where you need to go. You have to have the$48 permit as well. keep asking and call the GW if needed. If you ever shoot something be sure and retrieve it. Yes read the first pages of the outdoor annual regarding fines and punishment. You can go to jail for breaking many of the game laws. Read the whole book. Take it hunting with you.
