    Making a live edge shelf

I cut this slab from one of my oaks. Wife and I decided to try to make a live edge shelf out it. It’s 7 ft long and 17 inches at its widest point and was about 4” thick.

This brought out some knarly voids, checks, cracks and grain.

Looks good. Out of curiosity how long did you allow it to dry? Not sure it matters, but I'd look into filling the cracks & voids with epoxy or something similar.

I cut a large dado in the back so it can sit over a wall. It will serve as a shelf and also a base for handrail for an opening in my upstairs loft.

It’s been drying for 4 years. My idea was for a very rustic piece so I am not planning on using any epoxy on this .

I did however use some on a window sill my wife wanted in the dining room. She loves the way it turned out.

Been working on this and finishing my barndo kitchen build. Both are coming along nicely. Will have to go onto the big city to buy some steel to make a handrail.Click image for larger version

Here is where the shelf is going to give you an idea. I am headed to Regional Steel to pick up some rectangle tubing for the handrail. Oh joy I get play welder later on this evening when I get back. Click image for larger version
