    Cedar fence question

I just finished a cedar privacy fence and now need to put a finish on it for protection and to preserve the color. Any suggestions? Everything I have looked at is expensive and its going to take a lot of it. Thanks!

Thompson's is expensive.... motor oil thinned with a little old gas works good, but watch the sparks.

I use the thinned motor oil and have have great results.

Thompsons is mineral oil, and kerosene with a couple of UV additives.

You could be violating enviromental laws using the motor oil if you decide to go that route.....I would do it discretely if I wre you......

Rocketman, does it preserve the color pretty well (keeps it from turning gray)?

I have been building fence and decks for years and you are gonna get some graying no matter what you put on it. To get rid of the gray you just pressure wash it once a year and seal it with Thompson's water seal. Thompson's will help preserve the color for a while, but you are gonna get some fading from the sun no matter what you do.......

I work for landscaper who builds decks, fences, arbors, etc. We use a product made locally in DFW called Readyseal. It is an oil based stain with really rich colors.

You've gone to the expense of building a cedar fence, why not spend a little extra to make sure your fence lasts and stays as beautiful?

              Comanchehunter,
That is exactly the stuff I was looking at (readyseal). I looked at a fence a few months ago that it was used on and it looked great. It's expensive, though I get your point about the expense of the cedar fence to begin with. Where is the best (cheapest) place to get it?

Is readyseal sold in the Houston area and how is it applied?

Olympia makes a good cedar stain/ water sealer as well. It is a little cheaper than the Thompson's brand.

Refugioco, I believe it is usually applied with a roller. I do think it can be sprayed though.

                        Hello TexasRecurve,

There is a company in Houston called Decorative Concrete Supply (290 & beltway area)that carries a product called Standard Paints, Inc. - Wood Defender. Its by far the easiest to apply and will give you the best longevity. Hope this helps

2x on ReadySeal. Here is their website:

Ready Seal® is a professional grade wood sealant that is superior to other sealant products when compared in ease of application, maintenance, and finish.

texasrecurve I get all my fence stains/sealents at North Texas Building Supply. It is about $80 per 5 gallon bucket and that 5 gallon bucket will do about 100 foot of fence covered really well. I think it is the readyseal brand as well.

I've got an 5-6yr old cedar fence that needs some attention(turning gray). I plan to use that readyseal but what all prep do I need to do? I've never done any of this work before so please explain in english

I do have a garden pump sprayer but not a pressure washer..
