Hey, it's starting to look like a bow!

Your glue lines at the fades look awesome too BTW, that's impresive work considering this is your first bow. My glue lines didn't come close to being that good on my first one!

I do have a question though, what kind of string material are you planning on using? I see you don't have any phenolic or fiberglass on the tips, so I can only assume that you are going to be shooting B50 Dacron? There has been some debate, in bowyer circles these days, on whether or not you need to reinforce bow tips, to handle the forces of modern FastFlight string material. Some say that if you shoot a string with a padded string loop that you can get away without reinforcing tips. I always put phenolic in mine to be on the safe side.

If your going to shoot B50, then the tips will be fine the way you built them.

    Keep up the good work!

        TM,
Yes the debate rages on...sorta, it seems to be the general consensus, as long as there are a hard piece of material covering the tips then you can pretty much shoot what ever material you like. I fancy hardwood, antler and Buffalo horn over phenolic. Not saying anything is wrong but just like different material.

I've used just darn near every material for bow strings, 50,95, dyna 8125 450 FF FF+ I see no real advantage as far as speed. (I did over a chrono, by about 2-8 FPS)

The tip reinforcement is just so the the tip will not succumb to splintering due to excess vibration from repeated shots, hence causing the splintering, the older bear bows were not reenforced, but then again good ole B-50 Dacron was pretty much the standard back then too.

The glass of today is much more resilient than before, so I'm sure there are bowyers who would say you could shoot premium strings with out any tip over lays.
I guess I never have to worry about that be cause I'm a die hard B-50 guy, it just makes bows "Stupid Quiet" to quote a friend who I made a few strings for.

Besides it's great to say "Yeah those tip overlays are from the Southern asiatic double twisted horned water buffalo from the cape".........
or some place off eBay... LOL

Do you make your own strings too?

I bought a garage sale Ben Pearson 52" one time. Loved it. Had a friend make me a string and he didn't mention it was ff. I was shooting 3d one day and the string loop sunk into the limb about 2 inches on a shot. It had a thin wood tip overlay I believe.

Greywolf--Yes sir, I build my own strings. I figured if I was going to build some bows, that I needed to be able to twist up a string! I'm not a fan of the endless loop style (No offense to those that are), so I make flemish style strings out of Fast Flight Plus or B50 Dacron. I let the bow tell me which string material it prefers. I typically will build them 12-14 strand, padded to 18 strands in the loops. Another benefit to building them yourself is that you get the right loop size for the tips and perfect nock fit.

I've seen bows that this has thing happened to as well. All of them have been with FF type modern string materials.

Share (IYHO) the advantages of a padded string loop. I'll be honest, I made one with once and it seemed to be louder, it was B-50 material red and black, not for sure color has a thing to do with it. But afterwards, I twisted up another Greywolf string and it was silent on the same bow.

I'm intrigued...again..... This was a recurve I tried the padded string, figger since the string don't touch the longbow limb, it really wouldn't make a difference.

Ya never to old to learn something.

I'm sorry but TBH bow build a long rules require you to post pics in a timely manner. That would be today.

Ok, Ok, OK. I just went out to the shop to turn off some lights I had on? So as not to break the TBH bow build along rules of posting pics in a timely manner here is one. This is what the bow looked like when I called it quits for the day. Oh, I left a piece of paper in the way? (Don't want to show too much too fast!)
