    homemade cover scent

bought the pot from goodwill for like $3.99.

fill with cedar clippings and water

    boil half the water off

    pour into spray bottle

scent is VERY strong. the liquid is red. im borderline concerned about it ruining clothes or smelling unnatural, defeating its purpose altogether. has anyone tried this? i got the idea from some guys post on here a while back and he swore by it. if it doesn't work, im out less than id spend on a bottle of scent killer so its not that big a deal.

We've done this in the past. It is a very strong cover scent and works well. You can dilute it with water to tone down the potency.

I use that but I put some fresh cedar branches in the bottle with it. It is very strong

so its not too strong to be unnatural and scare deer off? does the scent come out of clothes? does the color stain?

i covered a ladder stand in camo burlap this wknd, then sprayed it down with my new cover scent. stunk up the garage for a good long while... i will top off the bottle with water next time im at the ranch to dillute it some

It'll take more than just topping off that spray bottle you have. May want to pour most of that out into another bottle for reserve. Looks like that bottle's probably 32 oz., Use MAYBE 4 oz concentrate scent and the rest water. I don't know the exact potency of our concoction or what ratio we diluted, just kinda trial and error. Just think of it as if you can smell the scent of it, you KNOW a deer can for sure smell it. If it's a very strong smell to us, think of what that deer thinks... He'll probably be spooked. Just need the scent itself, not overpowering.

Never had any issue with staining clothes (as it's hunting clothes, wasn't a concern). Diluted enough, no issues with the smell not coming out of clothing either.

              Good luck!

I used to do the same thing. The problem I found was that my clothes began to take on a nasty smell that would not wash out.

I know anther TBHer that does this and he has good results. I believe his is a little more diluted than yours and he only used it because we have a lot of cedar in the area.
                  Looks good.

I wonder if the same type of deal could be done with acorns and oak

Or you can just pull a hand full of cedar off of a bush as you walk out into the pasture and put in in your pocket each time. I've been doing this for years and it helps but in a wind like we are having this week best option is to hunt into the wind.

Makes you wonder what the old timers did to kill deer, I mean they didn't have camo, scent lock, tinks, cover scent, etc. My Grandfathers, grandmothers and others just hunted with the wind in their favor. Sometimes I think we as hunters are getting too lazy and rely on hunting products too much. We could all stand to become better "hunters" but in the mean time I'm going to try this.

                          Great idea JackH!

I wonder if this would work with fox urine, coon urine or skunk scent...."here skunky, skunky this won't hurt a bit"
