I wouldnt suggest putting anything wet or mushy inside the feeder it will clog. I use thick schedule 40 and have yet to have one break. I use heavy swivels and thick steel cable about a foot long only. 4' of rebar with 3' of it in the ground. Weld a washer to the top to prevent the ring holding the pipe cable from being bumped off. I even drilled pilot holes and put reinforcment screws around my caps just in case the pvc glue fails. I drilled 4- 5/8" holes staggard around pipe so it trickles out as they roll it. I evetually ducted taped one to slow em down. It works great I have made about 5 of these and although the cost is alittle more I have yet to have anything fail or break. I also bought a 99 cent clean out plug and made a small 6" sealed chamber of gravel to keep em rolling it even without corn as noted above.

We have a couple and they work great. Depending on your hog population you may have to fill them often! Stake'em to the ground good... our hogs beat the heck out of them.

We used the smaller 20-gal barrels for ours. Put a piece of all-thread end-to-end and put a piece of 3/4" plywood next to the barrel, a fender washer on top of that, and double nuts. It holds 50+ lbs of corn and if you fill it late in the evening, they will still be there in the AM when you come sneaking--unless the holes are too big.

I had to finally hang mine from both ends to keep the big boar from busting it up so bad. Even with it suspended from both ends (with swivels) at his head height he still managed to put enough pressure on it to bend the 5/16" eye bolts till they looked like pretezels.

Yeah don't need many holes in it either.

Sounds like a waste of beer to me

We made ours with 6" PVC 5 FT long with 1/2 in holes at 12-3-6-9 oclock positions.Drill 1/2 hole in end cap and use 3/8 eye bolt with a large flat washer on inside of cap and double nut on end of bolt.Dont need swivel. This will be the forth season using it

Do you have pics of this? How does this work? I picked up a lot of 8" pipe with the intention of making some more feeders, only to find out that the caps would cost me around $100 per feeder. I've been trying to come up with an alternative.

                  Thanks.

What's the consensus on the size and number of holes to drill in a piece of pipe about 3 ft. long?

3/8"-1/2" on hole size. I have a 4"x5' with 6 ta 8 holes at 1/2" in size and the ole boar that was coming to it would empty it out in a couple of days but he was there for 9hrs at a time!

I rather not drill enough to start out with cause you can always drill more if need be.

                      Good luck

How long do they last with a lot of hog activity? Corn wise. How long between fills?

Yeah, I am planning on taping up all but three holes. I am hoping that helps a bit. The thing I don't like is that I have to fill it and leave scent out there on a daily basis.

I built one and am just trying it out. The hogs freakin' love it though.

But if you fill it daily and leave scent there, wouldn't that condition the hogs to get used to human scent?
