Mostly because the government is made up of politicians, and politicians like it when voters are freaked out. That's when more people are willing to sell their souls to a politician who can "save them".

The woman from the CDC a couple days ago that said "not if, but when" and told everybody to just stay home, keep your kids home, work from home on teleconference, etc... is Rod Rosenstein's sister (Nancy Messonnier). She did everything she could to make people afraid, and it worked. https://legalinsurrection.com/2020/0...cdc-statement/

The Democrats know they're going to lose the election in November. Their only hope is that something really bad happens that can be blamed on Trump. They've been hoping for a recession so Trump can't go into the election touting a booming economy and stock market. This virus thing creates an opportunity for them. If it really is gonna kill us all, then that's great for them. Economic collapse PLUS "Trump let your loved ones die. He didn't do enough. If WE were in power, it wouldn't have happened...."

If it ends up being more like a bad flu for a few weeks and we don't all die, they can still benefit IF they can scare everybody bad enough to where people hole up and stay home, stop going to work, quit spending money, long enough to cause a big slow down in the economy for the next few months leading up to the election. They will (already are trying to) blame it on Trump and the Republicans.

And Trump and the Republicans, just like all politicians, want to be seen as the saviors who are doing something about it. So they're rushing to the cameras with checkbooks in hand too. Meanwhile, the Democrats are whining about how the Republicans aren't writing big enough checks. Yada...yada...yada...

Politicians suck. Some more than others, obviously. Don't let them freak you out. Wash your hands. Don't lick door knobs. Go on about your life.

Well.... 10% of those politicians could be gone in 2 months. They are all in the high risk group with age, they are all in campaigns surrounded in large groups of people......

          True.

Some of them are abnormally touchy-feely too.

I don’t believe that 400 cases is a large enough sample size to give a mortality rate. The mortality rate in China was based off of 80 ish thousand cases. The flu mortality rate here is based off of millions of reported cases. When Italy or any other country sees the 2 % rate with the number of confirmed cases as China I will stand corrected.

But of that 80K..... 50K still are sick and have the flu! And now they are finding out there is up to a 14% relapse rate after full recovery

Italy now is at 650 case and 17 deaths

That's the whole point...she hasn't traveled or been around anyone who also knowing has it, so where did the original host get it from?? I didn't think she caught it from a strong china breeze & reckon that part of cali is about to get a little loco.

I'm really surprised mexico hasn't seen a case yet with all the illegal immigrants from so many countries. We actually had or have a little flu crisis at the local BP detention facility I heard on the local news & bet they are double checking!!

I was reading the virus doesn't last long outside of host in warmer temps and higher humidity. It last over 24 hours below 45 degrees but less than an hour in temps over 70 degrees. That will keep it mainly in cooler climates.

I heard something today that I thought was interesting and somewhat explains the "freeking out". It was a discussion of how many people a single person is infecting and how that hurts workplace productivity due to lost man-hours on the job. As a baseline, influenza is about a 1-1 ratio. One infected person typically infects one other person. Obviously, you try to get the number less than one to get it to burn itself out. SARS was in the 10-12 range which is scary but, symptoms occurred quickly. So even though it was highly contagious, symptoms occurred quickly so isolation worked well to contain. With Corona the number seems to be about 2-3 and with a longer infectious period, it has the potential to keep spreading. As it pertains to productivity, it is expected to reduce the workforce significantly (just by being off the job) and this is expected to be a long term problem. Therefore, it's is very difficult to get back to full production output hence, the seemingly disproportional hit on the stock market.

Common flu death rate is 0.1-0.4%
                      COVID-19 is at least 2%

COVID 19 stands for COrona VIrus Disease 2019 (year it appeared). I don't think that means there are 18 predecessors, necessarily.

This is really interesting & somewhat reassuring... Like the potus I'm a jerma-phobe & really bugs me when people shake hands when they are knowingly contagious.

I did see where AMLO allowed that cruise ship that was turned away to dock in Cozumel.

There are 8 (known) different coronaviruses. Four of them are very common and everybody has probably had one or more at one time.
