    Cold Plunge/Ice Baths

After listening to the Andrew Huberman podcast about the benefits of cold plunging, i've started to do it 4 times a week for around 4 min each. I just use a chest freezer and keep the water around 40 degrees.

Ive been doing it for about 4 weeks now and noticed a couple things:

-mood boost( i do the ice bath right when i wake up, go straight from bed to chest freezer) and i have noticed my mornings are a lot more productive and I'm not as tired.

-For some reason it has helped with my asthma. I've looked up studies but couldn't find anything. I have reduced my medication to taking 1/2 as often.

-mental toughness - getting right of your warm bed into 40 degree water takes a lot of telling your mind to go F itself. I like the mindset it gives me to start the day.

-No more soreness. I usually try to lift weights or ride peloton each day. I used to be sore but the ice baths have gotten rid of that.

Does anyone else have any experience with cold plunges/ice baths?

I’ve seen Rogan doing them and he says they suck everytime but the results are there.

        Nice!

I want to get one. How do you keep chest freezer at 40 degrees? Do you use anything to clean the water?

Chris Hemsworth has a show called Limitless on Disney +. It has an episode talking about the benefits of exposing yourself to extreme temps (hot/cold). Very interesting series.

Buy Inkbird ITC-308 Digital Temperature Controller 2-Stage Outlet Thermostat Heating and Cooling Mode Carboy Homebrew Fermenter Greenhouse Terrarium 110V 10A: Heating & Temperature Control - Amazon.com ✓ FREE DELIVERY possible on eligible purchases

This device lets you set a max or min temp so when the water hits 40 degress it shuts the freezer off. And when it gets to 43 degrees it will turn it back on.

I use this to keep the water clean.

I don't do an ice bath, but after running I've been getting in the pool. Been low 50's water temp and I'll stay in 15 minutes or so. Don't usually do it after weights.

Feels nice on my joints while I'm in there. Don't seem to feel any different as far as soreness goes once I'm out. Probably not cold enough.

I'd like to hear more about your setup. Type and size of freezer and most importantly how long does it run to maintain temp?

Have you researched cold plunges for time? Four minutes at 40° sounds a little short on time to see the advantages and put your body into action.

I was doing the full body cryotherapy for a while and felt great during treatments regarding aches and pains and saw the best sleep in years but the place was a bit out of my way and pretty costly.

I have 14cuft chest freezer. I bought a temp probe on amazon i posted above that turns the freezer off when the water reaches 40 degrees and turns it back on if it gets over 43 degrees.(all of these parameters are changeable on the probe device). I also posted a small filter that runs in it.

All of the research Andrew Huberman mentions shows that you get the biggest benefit doing cold plunges for a total of 11 min per week. They all usually break it up between 2-5 minutes sessions. The studies point out you can do more but you hit the max benefit at 11 min per week.

Here is a summary of his 2 hour podcast about it if you want to learn more:

Done correctly, deliberate cold exposure can positively affect brain and body health. I detail some of those benefits and how best to access them.

Sounds like a good plan and much less expensive than anything on the market.

Any idea how much the freezer runs during a day?

I haven't done it but my dad takes cold showers every day no matter how cold it is and tells me he feels much better every day.

I've been doing Wim Hoff breath work and cold plunges intermittently for a few years. No special set up , either pool in winter or cold showers. All the benefits you mentioned especially the mental discipline. Powerful boost to the immune system. I may by one of the cold plunge tubs one of these days.Congrats to you; keep it up.
