    Entering deer in record books?

The other day I saw a Facebook post with a guy giving John Eberhardt a hard time for “only having X amount of bucks” entered in P&Y.

Eberhardt can rub a lot of people the wrong way, but I found it odd that someone would take the time to go through the record books to decide whether celebrity hunter A is a better hunter than celebrity hunter B.

I’ve only ever had one of my bucks scored. I have all the information but for some reason I just never have felt the need to enter it. I have a few others I’d like to know the score on possibly, but I kinda feel like I’m wasting someone’s time if I have it done and don’t enter them.

How about everyone else? Am I the only one who feels this way about it or am I wrong?

    “Record books”, “scoring” and “management”

All terms by a certain sect.

I have about dozen deer that would easily qualify for p&y but never bothered to do so. I never understood why it’s that important to someone.

It has never been very important to me. The only reason mine get measured is because our club rules require it. If it is not killed on our club I don't even bother. Has never been a big deal to me.

          I haven’t entered any in the B&C or P&Y , maybe I should?
Got a pronghorn & 3 whitetail that measure enough for all time book , 160 gets in the annual?

I enjoy going over scores and scoring my animals but have yet to enter any of mine into any of the different books

Have never entered anything—never will. Have numerous animals from Africa that are purportedly very high scoring. Killed by being lucky as compared to being a great white hunter. Those will never be entered either. Means nothing to me. I have friends that enter every qualifying animal into “the books” and I only give them a little Shiite about it.

Ive had one officially scored and never entered.
                I have several P&Y bucks.
My big thing is, I dont want people knowing where I hunt. Specifically out of state where folks try to lease ground from under you.
I also had mine officially scored to see if I scored them any different myself than an official scorer. I was pretty close. So, for my own enjoyment, I know what they score but it doesnt mean a darn thing!

I entered my buck in B&C. It took me many years and effort to kill a net 170+ low fence. The landowner wanted them entered. Back before “fake” deer killing a book deer was a big accomplishment.

I entered my 165 in P&Y. Hunted a long time to kill a deer like that. It was a huge deal to me. I have a B&C antelope. Never entered it.

Different strokes. I do believe I’d enter a book muley

I've entered animals in both P&Y and SCI. The reason I do it is not for glory. Heck, only a top 5 animal is glory. No, I do it as a way to support the clubs and what they try to accomplish. There's a reason I'm a life member of SCI, DSC and P&Y. Especially SCI and DSC. Those groups do a lot of good for us hunters and I chose to support them. Entering my animal in the record book is a way for them to generate money and continue their efforts. Yes, I could just send them my donation, but I would rather get a little something out of it, like my name in a really thick book that no one will ever find my name. That's why I do it.

I have never killed a deer that would make the books - probably why it isn't that important to me although I am generally interested in the score of a deer I kill.

I have to admit I may feel differently if I am eventually lucky enough to kill one that would make it.

                          Entering deer in record books?

I have several that would make the book. I have only ever entered 1, and that was because a friend pressured me to do that. I don’t really care about seeing my name on page 1000 of some stupid book. And also, I disagree with the way they have deductions. I think a deer should get credit for everything he grew.

Yes, which is why I prefer SCI

I couldn’t care less what B&C, P&Y, or SCI thinks about my kills. I will never waste my time trying to enter one.

OP you can score the deer yourself if you’re just curious.

Plenty of ways to support those organizations without putting your animals in their books. I’m not against anyone doing it. Me personally it’s irrelevant if my kills are in them.
