Go to San Marcos, Wimberley, New Braunfels. The best Tex Mex and BBQ is in San Marcos. Herbert's and Hays County BBQ. The tent crap in Austin is starting to get cleaned up but it was bad. Other than that it's still way better than Dallas or Houston. Especially on the west side.

If you're looking for a similar bar scene to Rainey, you can do West 6th. Start at 6th and Guadalupe and go west of there. It's much cleaner and the crowds are much more accommodating than the old 6th street.

If you like upscale seafood, Perlas on Congress is some of the best in town. If you want a wild game menu, Lonesome Dove downtown is always good too.

Id stay away from Dirty 6. Rainey isnt near as bad but Id rather go hang out at a few places on Barton Springs- lot less stressful as far as feral citizens and thug life than anywhere on the Downtown side of the river
