My wife tried to get me to build one. Told her when I can buy a $100k boat we’d get a pool. I ain’t got a $100k boat and she ain’t got a pool. Life is good.

We , my wife , has had several pools over the years and our several relocations . If there is a worse / less used thing we , my wife , has ever invested in I'm not sure what it would be .

Worked for me also, about 15 years ago all I heard from wife and my kids was pool pool pool.Being in the construction business I new dang good and well a pool was not in my future.Almost everyone I have ever talked to about a pool said no way they would ever do that again.I have even filled in a couple pools that came with a house that someone bought.

I made a deal with my family that we would first get a above ground pool and wife and kids would take care of it for one year.If all went well and they still wanted an inground pool I would make that happen.Well long story short after about 3 months in I had to take over pool duty. After a while I tore that thing down and hauled it to the dump.Nothing else was ever said about getting a pool.Best 1000.00 I have ever spent.

I am in the pool business and i hate pools, lol. If you have young kids and plan on staying for awhile I think the investment is worth it, ours was used for 20 years, the past 6 years it has not been used much, wife floats around in it reading a book and sipping a margarita every once in awhile.

When I built my pool, I had an 11 year old, a 10 year old and 2 month old twins....all girls. There hasn't been a spring or summer in the last 16 years that it hasn't been full of kids. This past Friday I heated the pool so that the twins could have about 25 classmates over for a small birthday party for another of their friends. My niece and nephew are 12 and 10, live next door and are in it all the time. I spent $30k to build it in 2004 and about $40k to remodel it last year and many of my kids best memories involve that hole full of water....where I could always find them, their friends were always welcome and I could keep a close eye on the boys that came sniffing around.

We built ours last year. Found a credit union with good rate and had them pay builder per the project which was spaced out over the few months. Barely cost me anything since it was interest only until the project was done. As soon as the pool was finished we Refinanced our house and rolled in the pool and our rate was so low that my mortgage payment was still a couple hundred bucks less than it was originally even with our Pool/Built in Grill and Bar.

And I’ll 2nd some of the others, we knew it wasn’t an investment, but a luxury. We have had the best family and friend time in there and we’ve used it numerous times this winter in the spa with a good drink!

Built mine 15 years ago and still love my pool. I like drinking beer watching TV and BBQ by the pool. I guess I’m still a big kid, but my wife and 14yr old still likes it as well.

If you can’t pay cash, don’t do it.

Bought a house with a pool three years ago and would do it again . I have 3 kids (14, 10, 5) and they use it a lot. I'm not sure I'd buy the house with pool on such a heavily treed lot though. I haven't gotten tired of cleaning leaves out yet and spring oak pollen is a major PIA. But after those, it's nice and we use it often.

Built ours last fall so haven't used it much other than the spa. Kids and wife are really forward to it.
We went with Bank of America on a Home Equity Line of Credit. We were able to control the dispensing of money that way to the builder.
Biggest advice is don't go cheap. This is a big investment and get what you will be happy with. Get a builder that has a lifetime warranty and in an either large regional or national builder.

We put one in last year, love the pool, builder not so much. Doesn't add value to your home, so not an investment, but sure is nice when it's 100+.

I'd have to ask her... they also run a pool service department. Those poor guys are always hopping.

Pools are nice to sit around but are a bad investment
