The 11ft 7in gator in my pic above didn't hurt the 12/0 hook in his belly. The set in the first pic is the one I caught him on. If you have gators straightening a 12/0 hook you either need to shoot faster or you hooked them in the mouth which gives them a good shot at straightening any hook.

I have had 14 o bronze hooks straightened and 1000lb line broke. Now I only use stainless shark hooks and mule tape. Not fishing for smaller gators though. If he feels this east tx gator is 12 ft he needs big gear.

You must find some angry gators to be breaking 1000lb line ripping a hook through their guts.

Yes. One actually died and we found him floating two days later.

The fact is that he is after one specific monster gator. He has one chance to hook and hold a gator that will weigh 600 to 700lb. There is no legitimate reason to use small gear and risk losing that chance .

In a non core county which he is in... He can just shoot it as long as its not public water.

That's right, that feeling when you ease that dinosaur to the surface is always a rush. Shoot fast!

                1) I need to do some recon and find out just how big this gator is, I have not seen it

                2) I need to buy some big hooks apparently if it is as big as I was told

                3) Post a live hunt thread when I try to catch it

4)mrc I will leave the "lot lizards" to you

Next warm day we have I may do some scouting. Any of you that know more about them think they would sun on one of these 70 deg afternoons?

He may be coming out to sun but in my experience the older bulls tend to come out of dens a little later than the smaller gators. Don't be surprised if its late march or April before you see him. An alligator wants to be 88 degrees and can absorb heat with his solar panel back. When the water is in the high 60s and low 70s he will stay in den at night and lay on the bank through the mid day on sunny days.

Fyi.... They can see hear and smell better than a deer.

Game Wardens. I wouldn’t just shoot it.

dont use a treble hook you need a hook that they can swallow so it hooks their stomach and they wont pull hard on the line. like other have said cane pole with a clothes pin probably gonna be the best bet.

We shot both ours with a 410 slug and it was lights out. By far the most exhilarating hunt Ive ever experienced. Even more than a screaming elk

This correct, a big hook and some strong line is needed for big gators. I didn't see this mentioned but if and when you do hook the gator you need to be very gentle pulling him to the surface. Don't go all Swamp people with it and he will likely just come to the surface calmly and present a shot. The hook hurts their guts and it's not necessary to horse them up. For a big gator a .22 will not suffice. We usually shot the big ones with a .410 slug.

In a non core county you can just shoot unless they are in public wAter which I assume this one isn't.

That's cool. I did not know that... I never hunted 'em outside the core tho...
