Let me tell you about schools getting money for some of these kids that have disabilities. If the kid is on Medicaid and as one of my kids and he comes to me with a behavior problem, I document this on a computer program and then Mediciad is billed and if the kid is registered with Medicaid, then the school gets paid for the time I had to spend with this kid for his behaviors. On some kids, the worse they act the more money the parents get, especially with foster parents!

You want to talk about kids with Special needs, ask me, I deal with them everyday from learning disabilities to Emotional disturbances to name it we have it in my unit!

My unit is a SEBSS unit, Social, Emotional Support Services! A very unique service to LISD and some do not even have anything close to this.

I deal with Counselors, LSSP's, SPED directors, Doctors and parents almost daily.

Average length of my type of teachers in LISD is 3 years, I will be starting my 5th and final next year.

I love my kids and want to help them, but my hands are tied. They need help and I do what I can to help them, but it is not enough!

Give my a paddle and the right to use it and God back in school and this crap will go away!

Here's my wife's reply. That's all me typing this, not her.. I'm not a teacher and probably have errors the grammar police will foam at the mouth over.

The issue here is that teachers are not treated like professionals. We have degrees - a lot have masters degrees and have to ,by law, go to professional development multiple times a year. I am not a dyslexia specialist but I am trained to look for signs/symptoms of dyslexia. And I am an expert in 1st grade. I know what a 1st grade reader looks/sounds like. At this point the child looks/sounds like a typical 1st grade reader. I am not saying he's not dyslexic. I am saying the evidence I have does not ,ethically, show a need for further testing AT THIS TIME.

FYI - The outside testing was not age/grade level appropriate and parents have refused to allow the school to go through their own process - which is fairly quick. Our dyslexia specialist is very good and has been in contact with 1st grade teachers multiple times this year asking if we see any students with needs. She is very pro-active.

I am sorry you had a terrible experience but that is not always the case. I'll stay in my lane and you stay in yours.

Perhaps we can agree to respect each other in the roles we both have to further student learning and success.

According to some people here, by reading your wife's reply we are all unprofessional and the entire school district will get sued and shut down. All districts state wide may close.

My wife and I were the opposite, I guess. The school told us in the first grade that my daughter had the learning disorders. We didn't want to believe them, so we pushed back in the beginning. After paying much closer attention (for a year) and seeing the struggles she had, we gave into the testing. We also had her tested outside of the school. Both came back with the same results. It has been a real struggle with her, but she is making progress. She is now finishing up her 8th grade year. We go to the meeting every year, we pay for outside tutoring and she does get some help in school (just on the hard things, mostly in math). You see we told the school that we would rather our child make a 70 doing it on her own that to pass with a 100 with help. Let me tell ya, her math is a true struggle to get a 70 each grading period, but it is done on her own.

I will say I have not every received a dime from anyone because of my daughters learning problems. She does not get in trouble in school and gets perfect attendance every year. I do not think she has ever missed a day. Not every child is the same and to try and lump them all together is not correct. I used to be one of the parents that said she just needs her butt whooped more and she will straighten up. Well let me tell you that was not the case and I was wrong.

Also do not get me started on that dang test that they have to take. Our daughter takes it and fails the math section each year. It is so hard on her and she feels she is not as smart as her friends or equal to them. Which kills me, cause she tries so hard to just fail. So some of the comments do get me a little ticked, Until you live this day in and day out or do not have any dealings with a child like this, it is better to just keep from commenting.

This post kills me since we are discussing education. Very ironic.

Thanks to all the teachers out there, especially in public schools which our state and district leaders have turned into a chaotic mess with so many acronyms it'll make your head spin. ESL, ELL, LEP, PBIS, TELPAS, SLO, SPED, ED, ELA, ELAR, GT ... etc. The Texas public school system will continue to rank in the bottom quartile of the United States because of the high number of non-English speaking students we have and because of the state's failing bilingual policy.
BTW, both my wife and I sons graduated through the public school systems and both went on to receive masters degrees. One of them, I feel, is slightly something, but we decided to never have him tested or let it get in the way of his success.

Dyslexia, ADHD, all this bs. Parents excuse for not being a parent and working with their kid. A good a** whooping every other day goes a long way in the cure of these, so called disabilities.

One more thing, My daughter wants to go to A&M and become a Vet. We tell her, she can do anything she sets her mind too, she can be as smart as she is willing to work for. Is it going to be easy, well heck no, is her road going to be bumpy, well yes. Will she start her schooling right away at A&M, prob. not. Does that mean she will never make it to A&M, nope. Hard work will get her there and in the end she will be a better person for it.

You see having a learning disorder do not make you dumb (As some people make like to think) do it make the task of learning harder, yes is does. Does it mean in the end you will not be just as smart (or in this stupid world) hold as many or more degrees as the so called smart kids, depends on how hard you want to work.

This may be one of the most ignorant stupidest statements I've read on here in awhile. You obviously do not have a child with a learning disability.

We've been through this twice. Never ever trust the diagnosis from the ISD "specialists". Get them tested by a private specialist that is not affiliated with the schools.
