Leasemate can't say anything for blobvious business reasons. Leasemate has been a very close friend for 35 years. Story ends with a simple "that sucks". That buck is not worth a friendship to me.
The guest deserves a size 12 Red Wing to the taint repeatedly for taking the rifle from his son...what a *****.

Trust takes years to earn and a split second to destroy. Good call.
      Exactly right.

Doubt you'll lose a friend over this if he's mature enough to know that he screwed up. Wasn't your call anyway but I agree it's the right call.

I have a friend, yes we're still friends, who I let come hunting on my place to shoot a doe or a spike. He shot a 2.5 year old spike while with me and I showed him how to dress it and we quartered it and I loaned him a 152 quart Igloo to take the meat home with him. He said he was going to take it to Prasek's and have it processed.

Two weeks later I saw his wife in the grocery store and asked her if it was okay to come by and pick up my cooler. She says oh we had to throw your cooler away along with that rotten deer meat. I was shocked and asked her what the hell she was talking about and she said that he had forgotten about the deer meat and hadn't put ice on it for a week or so and it spoiled so they threw the cooler and meat out at the city dump.

We're still friends but he doesn't come hunting at my place anymore.

Free hunting isn’t always the best hunting anyway. So you and your buddy go find y’all a good lease just don’t invite his brother in law lol !

I would tell him that was his buck for next year and put it back on him. If he’s truly sorry he’ll show it. No way I would kick him off but a life lesson it needs to be. Deer hunting has gotten way to dang serious to the point of being ridiculous.

              EXACTLY!

              Deer are DEER!

Friends, family and life long relationships......priceless.

There is no darn way an animal would ever ride over my closest friends and or family. No WAY!

Those People have a fellow SOUL.....that dead arse deer, is food for the table!

And this was an older guy, sitting in a blind, who likely has no clue about management. Maybe it's like one of the only couple of deer he's ever shot and he's OLD?!?!?!?!

Make a management lease no guests - no problem. This eliminates exposure to mistake.

Blowing a close friendship and pissing on his Dad in the process.....I would never go there cuz......I would never put them in a position to fail and get JUDGED.

But he seems to be really up front I would take away is hunting rights next year he could be the camp cook.

Him: I need to confess to something, I think I screwed up.
Me: fire at will, you have my attention....
                  H: my brother in-law killed a buck
                  M; kewl, where at??
                  H: My stand
                  M: whaaaa????? Ughhhh explain....
H: so, you know I was going to take my 13 yr old nephew pig hunting on Saturday; right... well his dad decided to come... so I put him in my stand and well..... he shot a buck.
M: (at least 5 seconds of silence) he what????
H: (to save time) insert every excuse you could possibly imagine...
                  M: he what????
M: did you not tell him that couldn't shoot anything but pigs??
H: I didnt think he would see anything.
M: (another 5-10 seconds of silence) you know that 5 of us havent killed our buck; right....
H: I didnt think he would see anything

3 phone calls and A LOT of apologies later....

M: sorry but you are not allowed back on the property. Once season is over we will help you get your stuff off.

It has been a long day!!! We hunt on family land. Family only except this guy. It took me 3 years of asking before my Father in-law allowed him to come "visit"... last year the family finally agreed to let him hunt. He killed his first deer ever last year and got a nice little basket 8 this year. I feel horrible but it had to be done.
Is he still your best friend ? best man ? godfather to your children ?

exactly what i was thinking. losing a true friend over a deer is crazy..... if he is a true friend, a real friend then it shouldn't matter. ya he screwed up, but that's where you step in and stand up to the other leasers and make an argument for him. he didn't sleep with your wife, he made a mistake and its just a deer. I believe in loyalty to the things that truly matter.

The best way to keep from this happening if one allows guest is to have them hunt with you in the same stand so you can control the situation. Giving a guest the ability to make decisions for himself is asking for problems. At the end of the day, friends are more important than deer to me.

Some people can't seem to grasp the fact that this is family land; not a lease.
OP wasn't asking for opinions on what he shoulda/woulda/coulda done......he stated what he had to do. Sucks for the OP, but his best friend screwed up, pure and simple, when best friend's BIL (a guest on family land) screwed him over. The best friend's not hunting on that land anymore, and it's not open for further debate. If he wants to continue hunting, he can go find another lease. If they're really great friends, they'll likely remain great friends.......

Chef I made the mistake of explaining why I kicked a guy off a lease a decade ago here.
                            I was flamed.
I ran a 2K acre place for 21 years and had to send a bunch of people home for all kinds of stupidness.........

Tough deal for you Chef but I'm with Curt. I do acknowledge I'm not that mad at deer anymore and would rather my family/friends shoot one than me.
