Bragging to China about putting our toy on Mars is like a broke person bragging to his banker about the new Ferrari he's making payments to the bank on.
If you only see it as a toy or "rc car" as you mentioned in another thread...then I can fully understand how you derived to the conclusion you have regarding it. Not going to try to convince you otherwise. Have a wonderful Tuesday sir!
It's still money that could be spent on alot more important things.

That money belongs to a private citizen, no different than you paying your kid for mowing the grass. Not even in the same realm as distribution of tax dollars.

Obviously I was being facetious. I can only imagine the technology involved in the craft they put on Mars, or what it cost.
It's still not fiscally responsible to me, while we're 20+trillion in debt.
Lead the race! Only country to walk on the moon and who else can land on Mars? Winners!
Meanwhile....we are not winning when it comes to education, national debt, immigration, crime and many other areas. I can bench press more than Warren Buffet....so freaking what.
Fiction being the key word. I'm all for the private sector funding space exploration.
I understand what you're saying Roberto. The money to be made can be made privately by those with the sense to do this efficiently, and effectively. There's no need giving the government another avenue to cultivate corruption and idiocy, inflating the costs and ****ing up the whole process in general. If the government wasn't involved we'd be hunting space deer on Venus by now.

You cant do it without the government sticking their nose into it. I worked 2yrs for a company that was going to get into the satellite launching business. The owner had already bought an island on the equator to launch from. We were working on the rocket in Frisco. Everything was going great until Uncle Sam stepped in. They screwed him right out of business because he wouldn't play their games.

I couldn't agree more. And the amount of money we waste not fixing those problems is staggering.
Better equipping military: US technological air superiority is the biggest edge the US has over any other country. Where do you think much of the knowledge about aerodynamics, missiles, jet engines, and rockets comes from? NASA and its private contractors.
Helping military veterans: NASA work in robotics and shock absorption materials has lead to advances in prosthesis.
Cancer: LED technology used by NASA was licensed for treating tumors.
There's tons of applications for the technologies NASA and its private contractors develop that are applicable to many other areas. There's also tons of information we learn about physics from space experimentation, and the more we know about physics, the more we can apply that information to the development of new technologies.
There's plenty of other programs in the budget that provide no benefits that we should cut before even thinking about NASA.
Government contracts associated with Aeronautical and Space Engineering have brought forth thousands upon thousands of novel advances which are now applied to our daily lives.
Obama took the country into the 20 trillion dollar debt - going from 5 trillion to 19 trillion in 8 years.
To cut NASA and all Science applied with an eye to American MILITARY OBJECTIVES, is not a smart way to move forward in tomorrow's world.
The US Government 2018 budget total is $3.654 trillion dollars
Cut the BS elsewhere - it's a drop in the bucket at NASA in cost.
The outsourcing with PRIVATE SUB-CONTRACTORs - American Companies - they get a piece of this pie. So the monies - tax dollars - are redistributed back into USA COMPANIES. We don't outsource US Government contracts with foreign interests - when Technology comes into play dealing with US Military and or Defense contracts.
In Private Industry - you can't guarantee that some CEO isn't going to start his empire then sell out to China and or Russia? And all of the Intellectual Property within is given away to other Nations with a FAT CAT staying FAT
Think for a moment if GEORGE SOROS wanted to buy out a PRIVATE SPACE PROGRAM and then brought aboard SOCIALISTS and COMMUNISTS into management and control?
THINK.....FOLKS
It's not just BUSINESS.......it's US SECURITY
US Military budget $574 billion
Dept of Agriculture $17.9 billion
Dept of Education $68.2 billion
Dept of Commerce $7.8 billion
DOE $28 billion
Health and Human services $ 65 billion
Homeland Security $44 billion (ICE, Border Patrol and US Coast Guard)

Those silver life safety blankets are another, microwaves, microfiber, and that foam you can sleep on are just a few more.
NASA is .5% of our 2018 budget. Military spending is roughly 16%. Medicare is Roughly 14%. Then if you get into the "other" bucket, its like 17%.
