Brandon, is TPW still stocking Buchanan with stripers? Just curious.

Nice rig and nice catch! I know little to nothing about striper fishing, but last weekend I went with a friend of mine who’s into it & has a basic set up.

We tried downrigging with swimbaits right as the sun was getting up and didn’t get a bite! He was pretty surprised. We were running ~70’ deep in 130’. We started throwing spinners after and hour or so a lot shallower (55-65’) and started catching them pretty solid. Those things will slam artificial and those 10-12lb hybrids put up a fight!

Is that a real clear lake? Where were you marking fish? And did you see a thermocline ?

Yea it’s pretty clear. I’d say visibility was probably close to 20’ on Saturday when we were out. I have no idea on the thermocline, but the fish were from 50-70’? I’d say that most of them were probably 10-20’ off bottom. There were some fish suspended in deep water but nothing like the big schools we saw up shallow.

If that's the case , if it were me , I would down size my bait and troll with translucent colors. Storms has a chartreuse ,silver pre-rigged swimbait that's about 4" long I would try.

In this scenario I'm setting my weights at 45 ft. If I can't get them to go I'm moving shallow. Always keep your weights above the fish. Always

That’s where I use them as well. Also, downrig canyon lake with the same set up following the river on the west side of the lake all the way from the mouth of the river to the dam. In the mornings use planer boards up the river and deadly on whites and the larger striper by the dam when they are blowing the surface in the morning.
