    Buchanan Downrigging!!! Not to bad....

Got the downriggers mounted on the boat last week and yesterday evening decided to go play. 2.5 hours and 12 fish. Didn't find the big ones but did get into some nice ones. This is the time of year that Downrigging usually out performs live bait.

Yes I have two mounted on each side. The big ones a the Canon Mag 10's and the other 2 are the Canon mini Mags.

Something to keep in mind when down-rigging is let your bait out 75-100yds behind the weights. This will run a 1 ounces bucktail jig about 5 ft below your weights. Keep your weight, above your fish. If you run your weights through the fish you most likely bust up your school or spook your fish. Troll at 2.5-3 mph.

Why can't you use live bait on a down rigger ?

You can use big gizzards but you have to really slow your speed. But they won't live long. "Strolling" ( using trolling motor) big gizzards in the cooler months is deadly. When I stroll I use 1.5oz weight rigged Carolina and stay under 1 mph.

Plus if you're using threadfin usually you hook them through the nose and aren't durable enough to stay on the hook trolling.
