    Figure 6 hog trap questions...

I have a few questions for hog trappers who have been doing it a while and know the do's and do not's of trapping.

We are planning to build a pen style figure 6 hog trap using the 16' panels. The area we plan to trap is very sandy with lots of trees...in the Seguin area.

    1. What is the best size to build? We want one as big as possible without complicating things too much. It may be 2 weeks before we can check it.

    2. Can we attach the panels to trees or do you think the roots would get in the way and help them to dig out?

    3. How long can you leave hogs in a trap like that with no water in say 70-80 degree high temps...with them in the shade?

    4. I have seen the design but what exactly do I ask for when buying these panels and where are good places to buy them?

Thanks. Feel free to provide other usefull info.

We shot one pig last weekend. It's a long drive and want to make it worth our time by bringing home more meat...which is why we want the trap.

Don't leave the trap where it will catch when you are not there. You will have a bunch of dead stinking carcasses to deal with.

Wire it open and keep a feeder going in there so they will be used to moving in and out regularly. Then sneak in there and set it to catch as soon as you get there.

I used 4 16ft panels for mine. It can be bigger.

Check your trap every day if possible.

It's not fair to the hogs to leave them in the trap even if your going to kill them.

I put in water and feed for them.

Get them out of the trap as soon as possible.

We put them in a cattle trailer till we have enough to sell.

Find your nearest buyer and check out his minimum weight he buys.

If it 80 pounds there's no reason to keep one alive the doesn't weigh that much.

It's alot of work but trapping and selling can buy you more corn and other stuff.

Last year our hog sales paid for corn, fuel, some tractor parts, and another used trailer.

      Lot's good stuff.

I agree, you need to check the trap daily. You might be able to get by a day or 2, but I wouldn't push it longer.

Thats why we were considering using 8 to 12 16' panels and making a large trap that would also serve as a holding pen. Is this not feasable?

Used to do it at my roommate's ranch in Waelder. The trap we made was around 30 feet in diameter. Filled up a big trough with water and put a few hundred pounds of corn in it. Checked it every 3-4 days and never had one dead pig. Check every couple days if you do it in the summer time, though.

It is feasible if you have a setup for feed and water.

If you cannot check the trap daily or at least by the second day do not and I really mean do not set it. Yes a bigger area and shade makes sense problems with water is with hogs they must have water daily., Now if you could make this big enought to go around a small tank i would say they might make it. If you put tubs of water or even bath tub of sorts they will spill them or knock them over. or they will plumb wallow it gone very quickly.
A hog deserves a a clean and ethical kill leaving them in a trap for 2 weeks is not

So you would consider it un-ethical to leave hogs in a pen that has an 80' diameter even with food and water?

2 weeks would be worse case and thats If they got in the trap the day it was set and we could not make it down for two weeks. There are 3 of us and the odds would be low but it could happen.

I'm leaning towards the feeder idea. If they come in every night to the feeder, then it should not be a problem catching them in one night. Go down, set the trap, hunt, maybe sleep a little, then get pigs out of the trap.

I am saying that unless you have a tank in the middle of the trap then it is un-ethical. Sorry of I am offending you but I have caught a couple of hogs and have learned a thing or two

I hunted my brothers food plot till 1:00am one night this summer so I went back out to the food plot the next evening at around 3"00pm expecting to check the traps and get a shot at a hog later that night.

I found 250lbs sow dead in the trap with a bunch of shoats sucking away on her.

They had sucked her dry and her body couldn't keep up with them, the heat, the corn digesting and the stress from being in the trap.

Less than a day in a trap in the shade.

I would have got fourty cents a pound for her.

It doesn't take much to kill em.

Tim's right. Unless you have a stock tank or running water forget it or check it everyday.

at 42 bucks a panel I dang sure wouldnt be using 8-12 of them. The buying stations arnt paying anything at this time. I think I saw .10 80-125lbs with .25 for 251plus being highest.
