Today's bows at 50#s are faster then bows at 70#s 20+ years ago and even back then they had plenty of energy to get pass throughs on deer even at shots past 50 yards. For me the 2 most important things are shot placement and having good arrow flight. If your arrow is wobbling in flight you will loose a lot of energy when the arrow hits the animal and that can cause very poor penetration.
I shoot 65#s. My buddies girlfriend shoots 43# with a Magnus Stinger broadhead and if she doesn't hit any major bones she gets pass throughs on hogs and deer. At 65 pounds I get a lot of pass throughs on 200+ pound boars shooting them through the shoulders but sometimes the off side shoulder will stop the arrow.
