What road material would you suggest?

I need to repair/rebuild about 120' of private road leading to my gate. It's mostly downhill and the water runoff has made some good ruts. The road used to be a county road about 15-20 years ago so there is an iron ore type base with a little bit of white rock (not sure what kind) left. There's no material left that I can refill/repair with my box blade. I was thinking about an oversized river rock or crushed concrete or something but didn't know if I should a base down first. Here's some old pics of the road:

A good road base and mix in some Portland cement and water down. it will be almost like concrete and last a good while. This is what we did on the hill to my house and it has held up pretty well.

I would consider cutting some ditches down the sides of the road in addition to retopping.

crushed concrete with some sac-crete mixed in (as much as you can), then wait for a rain, or just the heavy dew from a few nights...

and yes, ditches to minimize run-off over the road bed would extend the life of it too.

Like Gary said you need to reshape the road with a crown and some ditches first. Whats there is most likely enough if you just pull it back up. Its the water running down the road tearing it up.

                        Unicorn horns will work better.

I'm only getting one tag per year!

Thanks guys. I'll talk to my neighbor that shares the road about the ditches. I figured I needed to divert the water with some type of humps or something.

That should be easy for him.

Gary nailed it Chew, it won't matter what you do until you crown the road and send the water to the sides. If you can find someone up there with a small maintainer that you can hire you can make it last for a long time. The alternative is to put a rotating blade on your tractor and start cutting the ditch little by little until you get it done.
You need to cut ditches down each side and throw the cuttings to the middle of the road to make it crown. We did turnouts on our ditches everywhere there was a low spot to throw the water out into the flats and relieve the ditch from carrying so much water.
It looks like you have enough iron ore in the ditches to accomplish what you need done.
